we could start a research thread - why did you, why didn't you, under what circumstances would you...

i would have been happy not being married a second time. from a cultural perspective I think the institution of marriage is a mostly antiquated relic of the past. my current wife and i had been living together for a few years and would have continued to do so. but there are several things that linfluenced my decision.

1. it mattered more to her. we both came from catholic families and it's a big big deal for catholic girls
2. there were tax implications. in the US tax incentives typically favor married couples, and evern more so married couples with kids (although we make too much money to qualify for a child tax credit).
3. my wife needed health insurance and back then there was no Obamacare
4. there are legal reasons. such as power of attorney in the case of a death or health crisis. Just ask gay couples who were not married about getting shut out of a hospital when their partner was sick or dying. And there are issues surrounding property and assets, namely that an unmarried partner has fewer or no rights to the estate in the event of a death.
5. while my wife cared more about the legal designation she wasn't interested in having a big stupid wedding ceremony and reception. I'd already done that once, which was enough. We went to a local judge and did the whole thing in 10 min.

yea, I'm on 1.2.4. and half of 5. with you on that.
doesn't sound very "romantic", but hell, at some point in a stable relationship you have to ask yourself why you don't take the legal and tax advantages you get from it.

major point for me are: health issues.
you depend on the good will of hospital staff to even be allowed to see your partner, let alone get info from a doc. it made me fucking furious. "are you married" - "no but we live together" - "sorry we can't share this informatioin with you." go fuck yourself.

one of my brothers has been with his lady for 20 years now, got two kids, never got married. both not fans of that entire thing.
the downside for him is in case the mother of the kids wants to, she can really fuck him over with child custody. like badly.

We're having a big shindig and the constant barrage of people being like "oh who even wants a big wedding" is real annoying. Different strokes you know what I mean.

Goin to a big one this weekend and I'm really excited about it.

Don't get me wrong I got no beef with people who just go to a courthouse or elope or w/e

Too much judgment surrounds this shit

welll I'm not gonna lie - I love it when people I'm somewhat close to did the "big thing."

I went to some shitshows - couples celebrating themselves to a level of BARF and not thinking a second if any of their "program" is actually fun for the guests - but others were some of the best days, ever.

I went to a big Sinti wedding once, 500 guests or something, 3 live bands, and way too much alcohol. total insanity and so much fun, I loved it.

also Turkish weddings, car parade, blocking the street and singing and all, love it.

just because I don't want to go through all the trouble setting that up myself, doesn't mean I don't love to be a guest haha.

big weddings can be fun, but probably not to plan. and if you've enough money to afford one, you can probably afford help in planning, too. or elicit the help of one of your 500 guests/friends.

We had a large wedding (around 450 people) and had a blast.

I have no issues with anyone wanting a justice of the peace wedding and can't remember anyone lamenting about the size of ours.

Weddings are often way overrated but tax benefits are a good thing I guess.

come to the benton harbor salvation army homeless shelter.

we can smoke crack, spread herpes and pick bed bugs out of each other's hair, munching on them like chimpanzees do.

Both really. He'll get a way to supplement his income from someone who won't really even be around much, and I'll get a place to sleep in a rad, hip part of town.
