We brutally house and murder all kinds of animals all the time. Let's not forget that.

Do you eat chicken or pork products, SJ? If not, match point to you sir. I know it's not exactly the same but eh

And people who are into horse racing absolutely talk about when and how moves are or can be made. Like if you're just watching the today show then yeah you'll just get triple crown/no triple crown but that's sort of true of basically everything.
Winning the Super Bowl is too but at least you have more to talk about than two minutes of "horse was ahead and then it won."

how do all the crowns fit on his head? this doesn't sound like a very practical prize.

Well no it's not really the same because someone wins the super bowl every year. The only real comparison I can think of is someone sweeping the major tournaments in tennis or golf.

And that's generally not as immediate because they're all spread out and there are events in between.

Part of the appeal of the triple crown races is the uniqueness of the whole thing.

Even then, a horse race doesn't really have much discussion to accompany it. The race itself doesn't last long, there typically isn't much passing, the track is plain, and most people (me included) have no idea what goes into getting a horse to win a race.

It's so detached from the common man too. Any idiot can toss a football around his yard and bitch about what a team's QB messed up. Who here is going "Man that one jockey did you see that thing he did?"

And that's another problem: the horse is the one racing. We can't interview the horse, I can't relate to a horse, I have no idea what it's thinking or what it could've done differently.

There just isn't much to talk about, which is the point he was making. It's just like "Hey that horse won. Huh. Also it's going to rain tomorrow."

If you make any effort to read about it or listen to people who know things about it talk, you'll know there are actual things to say about it.

I'm not saying you should or have to. Just that it's wrong to assume there isn't any deeper analysis possible.

hunter thompson once went to the kentucky derby. if i recall correctly, he had much to say about it, though i don't think he actually saw the actual race in actuality.

“You’ve got to stop this drinking,” I said.

He nodded. “I know. This is no good, no good at all. But for some reason it makes me feel
better…”

“Not for long,” I said. “You’ll probably collapse into some kind of hysterical DT’s tonight–
probably just about the time you get off the plane at Kennedy. They’ll zip you up in a
straightjacket and drag you down to the Tombs, then beat you on the kidneys with big sticks until you straighten out.”

I went to the derby infield once. It was a rainy weekend. 2010 I think.

It was a muddy mess of the worst humanity has to offer.

But also a ton of fun.

I already afforded that there surely is, but in practice we don't do it.

Eulogy you're defending horse racing in case you haven't noticed. It's ok to just let some things go.

Saying that analysis of it exists is not defending it

I can't defend horse racing or meat eating. But I understand the appeal of both. I think that is an obvious and understandable distinction.

But it's ok if people don't understand the appeal of it and I'm not sure you accept that.

You're telling sj he likes meat so he can't talk bad about horse racing, and talking about its appeal.

Honestly I have no idea where this is coming from. Are you saying I'm demanding everyone recognize the entertainment value of horse racing? That's not at all what I have said. I said analysis of it was possible.

I mean, I eat meat but do you not see how obnoxious it is telling people who don't like to eat meat the appeal of eating meat?

"Eating meat also props up some bad shit" =/= "you can't talk bad about horse racing"

You're apparently intent on misunderstanding two different points I was making to two different people so I'm just not going to bother aside from pointing out that one statement was addressed to SJ and one was addressed to killtrocity and duo. And they are about different things entirely.

Then what's the point of mentioning it if not to try to shut them up by pointing out some form of hypocrisy?

Or three different points, rather. I guess I will go through them

1. It's not like the super bowl because it isn't won every year

2. It treats animals badly, but I'm not convinced it's worse than how we treat animals we turn into food, some species of which are very bright, if that matters to you

3. People are capable of providing analysis of horse racing behind "this is the order they finished in"
