As I see post after post about Bruce Jenner's transition to a woman, and I hear words like, bravery, heroism, and courage, just thought I'd remind all of us what real American courage, heroism, and bravery looks like!

Of course, that photo turns out to have been taken by a photographer that was once nearly killed for cross dressing. And the photo is actually of toy soldiers.

Of course, the people on FB who shared his first post haven't shared this one.

The photo that accompanied my words yesterday to highlight "true bravery," was chosen from a quick image search. Just wanted something to fit my words. This afternoon, I wanted to find out who the photographer was, so I could credit his work.

In an ironic twist, I have discovered that the photo is part of a documentary created by a man who was beaten nearly to death outside of a bar in 2000.

After spending 9 days in a coma, suffering severe brain damage and being unable to walk or talk for a year, he chose to deal with the pain of the tragic event, by creating an imaginary world of characters and photos and stories, all set in WWII. His work is the subject of an upcoming documentary.

Why was he nearly beaten to death by 5 strangers?

Because he was a cross-dresser.

I could have chosen any one of hundreds of photos depicting bravery, but I chose this one. Do I think it was an accident?

No, I don't.

What happened to this man was cruel, wrong, and unforgivable.

i suppose the part that disturbs me is that mayfuck has drawn this line somewhere on a continuum between "pervert" and "legitimately transgendered". because it sort of comes off similarly to those who draw this nebulous distinction between the deserving and undeserving poor.

i guess i'm trying to understand exactly where that boundary is.

If there is a "boundary" i'm unaware of it. I don't understand sex or gender dysphoria, so I don't know where this "line" stands, and find myself explaining to clueless people in real life that trans people struggle on a suicidal level and request that those clueless people stop using terms like "freak" and "he/she" and "she/male" and "it" etc etc (if you search "******" on this website, scotty and eulogy's handles come up unsurprisingly)

I also know middle aged cross dressing--and nearly universally white--autogynephliac fetishists exists and bruce jenner is one of them, and in this instance that fetish is being accompanied by the most shallow, plastic, manufactured elements of womanhood being exalted in that Vanity Fair cover. This is a pop cultural low point for an industry that constantly berates women. Yet this angle is never discussed.

Compare Jenner, an accomplished, very masculine, rich white man who has fathered multiple children to Janet Mock, an underprivileged and feminine black homosexual who assimilated into womanhood off the bat before she transitioned. I don't even like Janet Mock's politics but she is representative of a lot of transwomen--particularly of color--that exist and that i've come in contact to and even housed in one instance.

Anything I'm saying in this thread has been lifted not from transphobic christian conservatives or 'crazy' radical feminists that trans activists love to harass, but from things assimilated transwomen have been saying for eons, transwomen and transsexuals who get assaulted by violent men, who are creeped out by older cross dressers, who get fetishized by the porn industry that liberals love, who get derided as "transmedicalists" and "gatekeepers". But every protected class needs gatekeepers, and why not with all the abuse that exists in the world?
