Vanity Fair seems like a bit of an insidious place to throw your coming out party when you consider the circumstances. Like other newstand rags, Vanity Fair trades in unattainable beauty standards for women. Jenner has the money and resources the average transwomen simply doesn't. He comes from a place of privilege, where he is spending this money with no fear of ending up homeless, no fear of being fired from a job. Jenner is now a de facto spokesperson for trans activism. It is important that he is a Republican. For all his accessibility to the health care needs that insure a relatively swift transition, consider that republicans are explicitly against universal health care, against gays, anti choice (Jenner will never be pregnant), and against welfare. So yes, follow your dreams if you can afford it.

Caitlyn is very lucky to have all of the love and support backing her, not to mention the money. Thinking about this all day yesterday and what my cousin has been going through for the past few years makes me wish he had all of this love and support too. Ever since he came out to my aunt and uncle they flipped out, disowned him and have spent years being cruel to him. It has literally shattered him... and just when he was starting to rebuild his world and get strong again.... his mom died unexpectedly last summer. Not even this, would make his dad have a change of heart...

Now he must live the rest of his life feeling like that chance his mom would turn around and accept him is gone for good. I'm furious with my aunt for dying and leaving her son to deal with this level of pain. I'm actually crying right now while typing this. I just want him to be happy.... have peace and joy in his life again. He has recently found someone he's interested in and I hope it will all go well for him... I cannot stand to see anyone suffer... and feel like they have to hide who they are, which is what my cousin did for most of his life.

one of my oldest friends went through something similar. years and years of being disowned by his parents. 5 years ago he killed himself. At least he's not suffering anymore.

Countless times I remember people telling him "fuck your parents you don't need them!" But not everybody can live with that kind of rejection. And looking back on it I don't think many people ever really understood how badly it hurt him.

I don't even want to count the number of LGBT friends I've had that are dead now. And every one of them had shitty relationships with their families.

I had a friend in high school who's own brother beat the shit out of him at school one day. It was to show his friends that he wasn't a fag like his little brother. I had several friends who's parents kicked them out of their homes (while they were in high school) because they were gay. I had one friend who was literally tortured by the kids at my school and in the middle of it his parents disowned him. He couldn't walk down a hallway without being spit on or physically assaulted. And after he blew his own head off with a shotgun every one of those pieces of shit who abused him and drove him to it talked about what a great guy he was. And then his parents and the school blamed it on "punk rock music" (I'm not joking). Right after he died I got pulled in a room with a teacher and the principle and spent half an hour listening to them tell me they were worried because I was dressing and acting just like he did before he died. They wanted to know why I wore black clothing every day and what music we were listening to. I couldn't fucking believe it. It was like I was living in an alternate reality.

What Caitlyn's (then Bruce's) mother said about her coming out as transitioning was just unbelievably kind and thoughtful. To have that kind of support from your mom must be fantastic. And to have this kind of support from so many people who don't even know her is just as amazing, and shouldn't be met with confrontation. It shows how we're moving as a culture, and I think it's in the right direction. Yeah she's lucky she has support, but shouldn't we be glad she has it? Why hold it against her?

That's actually a great point, to embrace every transition and every person. Caitlyn's is easier to accept for a lot of people and does create a difficult standard, but it's more helpful than it is hurtful.
