There are a lot of Bernie supporters who are at this point repeating bullshit about Clinton that began as conservative propaganda fueled by their hatred of her as a powerful woman.

There are also a lot of Bernie supporters who have spewed astoundingly condescending bullshit about minority voters because they can't wrap their minds around why a black or hispanic person would prefer Clinton.

this image of the far left or of his supporters specifically as these wonderful, open-hearted, peace and love revolutionaries is such bullshit. It's a fucking shame but his movement has become so non-self aware and steeped in hypocrisy and nonsense.

Fair enough. But I still think Scotty's point isn't entirely untrue. A lot of the vitirol towards Clinton which Sanders supporters have adopted comes from the right wing, and a lot of that originally began as hatred of her because she is a "bitch," aka a woman who can play slimy lawyer as well as any man

But when you have her playing slimy lawyer in a race against someone who is basically 100% squeaky clean and principled she just looks bad

Sanders was arrested in a Civil Rights demonstration

He was bringing up transsexual rights in the 80's being well past deciding gay marriage was a right

He should have done a much better job demonstrating his fights for minority groups, I think he came off as too much of a one issue candidate even if it's really the most important issue

I agree with all of that but I also think Clinton is just more appealing to minority voters as a candidate in terms of her specific policy positions, and Bernie supporters, who are mostly white, are choosing to not understand this. The millennial/social media voting bloc is overestimating how liberal the US has become because of the echo chamber, but I think most black Americans are extremely wary of people peddling promises like Sanders because they have been historically fucked over and over in this way. Remember that Reconstruction at first brought rapid, radical change to the South, and then it was all systematically rolled back by more wily politicians who understood that incremental change is much harder to undo. Exit polls are showing that a lot more people, many of them black Americans, are identifying as "very liberal," and they are still mostly voting for Clinton.

Also I can only imagine how hypocritical it looks to a minority person that all these white people are suddenly demonizing Hillary for Clinton crime policies they supported at the time, or for not being as hip to gay or trans rights as Bernie in the 60s or the 90s, whereas the vast majority of them probably fell closer to Clinton on these issues until the last few years.

Along with established democrats like Scotty here who just support the party and Hillary was always the party favorite

Because at the end of the day most voters aren't reading and discussing politics everyday and the media hardly covered him

Closed primary's also really hurt him because all the people who had given up on politics that he was bringing back in were told they couldn't vote for him anyway

I think that is a convenient answer that allows Sanders supporters to not seriously question why he has such a problem with minority voters. This is a guy who has essentially become the face of millennial social justice and social issue consciousness, and he can't win over people who aren't white. That's a serious fucking problem for both him and for the whole young, white, academic social justice movement. Civil rights heroes like John Lewis have endorsed Clinton. I don't buy that it all boils down to people not knowing who Bernie is.

The election process has hurt him for sure. However, he chose to run as a Democrat and all those people who wanted to vote for him but couldn't could have switched their party affiliation but apparently didn't, so it doesn't seem like they were very committed.

The other day a Sanders spokesperson said they would not drop out of the race even if it comes down to the convention and Clinton has accrued more popular votes. So. That's about the epitome of what this movement has turned into.

It was a matter of too little too late both on account of the general public becoming really aware of him, and Bernie doing proper outreach to minority groups


The gap between him and Hillary among African Americans has declined tremendously since the days of having BLM protesting at one of his speeches
