The other extremely disturbing thing is that his statement said that he knew if he continued down that path it would ruin his life

I have no idea if internets are correct, but on the TLC fb page I was scouring comments and found where he apparently molested a 5 yo and 5 of his sisters. It's sad because the type of counseling ma and pa duggar refer to is the Bill Gothard way of counseling, so he probably never got real counseling. They sent him off for 5 months to live with family and apparently a camp called ALERT that they send boys to for religious training and brainwashing.

Yes he was a mentor, not a trained therapist. Apparently he was sent away with church elders for help. The report says they hit the kids with a rod too. Jesus. Was there any therapy for the daughters that were molested? They make it out as if it wasn't a big deal because of some of it happened while they were sleeping. It states on one of the pages that before they moved into the big house... the kids had a common sleeping area. What a mess. Shouldn't Jim Bob be into some legal trouble?

One would think/hope but he technically went to the police (and I'll reiterate that that cop is now in prison on child porn charges!!!) so he's probably untouchable too. Ugh

Flashbacks to my childhood, holla. The most scared I've ever felt in life was waiting in "the back room" to get swatted with a wooden rod on my bare ass. Sheer terror. Sometimes my parents would take 5-10 mins before coming in, which made it worse.

If that report is authentic, and what you're saying is true, this means Jim and Michelle did everything to cover it up. Hope to hell they didn't tell those girls to just forgive him and pray for him. He molested them for a long period of time, was caught....then started doing it again.

All of us are certain that our nail biting nervousness came from my dads temper and the swats. We are all tense in our own ways. My parents tried the belt but it "wasn't hard enough" like for real?

yeah it was common to get spanked at least. every kid i knew got spanked anyway. i am one of those "got spanked as a child but turned out okay" grown ups, still i would never do that to my own children and glad we are evolving from that.

but there is a level of sadism above spanking that involves using rods or switches or making a child fetch the instrument of abuse. "times were different" is not an excuse or even applicable, child abuse is child abuse.

The first school I went to (for one year, after we moved to kc from California) I got paddled with a hole-y paddle by the principal once. My parents supported it.

I dunno how common that was in 80's private schools but that was the one an only time and then we ended up switching to a private school closer to home and it never was a thing that happened again. Maybe 1986 was one of the last years for that type of thing, I dunno.

My mom never did this but she did do a few things I see on those "you know you grew up in a Mexican household..." type lists. Probably would be more accurate with my grandma; my mom assimilated pretty well.
