i mean its no coincidence that a city will refurbish an area block by block and all of these wonderful new businesses just happen to pop up as opposed to another version of what used to be there

25 years ago i lived in what is now the hippest neighborhood in this city. Back then it wasn't hip. The neighborhood had a serious gang and drug problem. One summer there were two murders in the street within sight of my house. All of the commercial buildings were vacant and most of the homes were owned by slum lords. The roads and sidewalks were shit. None of the street lights worked. The park was filthy. etc. etc.

Now the neighborhood is "owner occupied," all the old homes are filled with white people and the old vacant buildings are mostly filled with boutiques and coffee shops. All the streets have been resurfaced, some of them with brick (out of historical accuracy since it's an historic neighborhood), the park has been completely refurbished. There are bike lanes everywhere and the city even installed benches and landscaping along some of the roads.

Of course, 25 years ago it was a shit hole because "poor black people live like animals". Not because the city didn't maintain it. Not because of the scumbag slum lords who let the entire neighborhood fall apart and then treated their tenants like they weren't human. No. It must be because of the terrible poors. Cause look now the poors are gone and it's so nice and clean

the one thing i miss about the old neighborhood was Sandman's BBQ. It didn't survive the white invasion.

now there's a hipster BBQ on the same block. it's good food but nothing near as good as the Sandman was
