If you try playing 5 a side football (which is often played indoors) and then play 11 a side football it is a completely different experience. You have far more space in 11 a side, you have more time to catch your breath, and tactics are far more important.

5-a-side football - fast, intense, more goals scored
11-a-side football - slower, more build-ups, less goals scored.

I've done that. Indoor soccer is more like hockey, yes.

But if you take away the obvious differences (omg one is on ice and has fewer players!!!!) you're left with basically the same game.

I actually preferred indoor soccer. Always a little more aggressive. And I could actually
score occasionally.

You're just being difficult. Like I get you're proud of the fact you watched fox sports 1 and read some Wikipedia articles about formations and tactics. Have your cookie.

You need to stop comparing sports based on 'functionality'. No one enjoys a sport based on function. What appeals ppl to different sports is the pace and dynamics, which couldn't be more different than an hockey and soccer. the size of a soccer field alone makes it fundamentally different than hockey Soccer is methodically paced, offenses build over the span of the entire field and build to a crescendo where finally a shot on goal is attempted. This nuance barely exists in hockey and when it does its exchanged for speed and violence. If I wanted to watch soccer played on overdrive then I'd watch hockey. But that's the point: I don't want to watch soccer on overdrive.

I usually played 8 to a side and it was hard. Fun as hell though. I got pretty good at putting people into the boards without getting called for a foul. REAL AGGRO FUCK YEAH

Saying hockey is the same as soccer is insulting to both sports tbh

Anyway I don't think american football is the greatest sport but if you took away the health consequences I could make an argument for it.

Maybe they should just take away helmets and shoulder pads? Do rugby players have long term health problems from playing?

Also I think soccer concussions are overlooked as a problem. But how do you fix that?

concussions are overlooked in hockey and football. Its a real problem. Players not reporting minor ones cause they want to keep playing and not get benched.

If you're going to go w/ this soccer/hockey thing then how about Literally everything in team sports except baseball/cricket is players moving a ball/puck back and forth across a rectangle while attempting to put it in a goal
It's useless to point this out because the experiences of watching and playing (not that I'd know on the latter) them are all very different

i should mention concussions are an issue in real football as well

blows to the head with feet, hitting the ball with your head etc

yeah but hockey and soccer have goaltenders so it's kinda like how apples and oranges are functionally the same you know?

ski flying and paragliding!

but seriously, most of you define "the greatest sport" in terms which sport is most enjoyable to watch on tv, or am I reading this thread wrong?

I mean are there really only so few people here who actually enjoy doing sports

I knew that! I was responding to scotty I guess even though he technically didn't warrant it yet (but let's be real that is obviously where he was going)

I hate how some people still consider it some sort of requirement.

I don't mind drinkin beers at a driving range though. If I'm being totally honest.

I've never golfed 18 holes and really can't even imagine doing it. How awful.
