I have 7 siblings all younger than me. Occasionally I'll think about how old one of them has gotten and then I realize that I'm 11 years older!

The thing that get me is thinking things, like to a kid born today The Pumpkins are the equivalent of what Buddy Holly was when I was born. Like the 50's where this insane ancient magical time to me and these kids that's the 90's for them.

I've had this belief for a long time that I won't live past 35. Clinicians have told me that is common with PTSD - sense of a shortened future, but usually people feel it like a sense of impending doom. I feel that sometimes but this is different to me, it's not like immediate danger, it almost just feels like how it will be and there is nothing I can do about it.

It's terrible that pets don't live as long as we do. Or at least longer than they do. But we gotta know the pain of losing them is worth the time we have with them.

Don't be sad, I'm sure you're putting in plenty of great work now to emotionally condition them to be within your control well into their adult lives.

I think having a plan in place for how you would force your kid to go see a psychiatrist at 21 when that's more than a decade away is not fair to that child's potential for developing into a well-rounded, autonomous adult with a strong internal sense of identity tbpfh

Yeah that's what I was referring to, and she said she'd force him to do it by "removing financial support". Just gives me bad vibes yknow. What if the kid was smoking pot at 21? Or doing coke? I know it's apples and oranges with the teenager-dating thing but still.

were you born in the 70s?

also, buddy holly died before he could tarnish any sort of legacy like corgan has. a more apt comparison would be kurt cobain.

I mean I think vixnix has her problems, of course, but I don't think she'd do the same thing if he was doing drugs. Anyway things turn out differently than you plan.

I guess you'd have to know my train wreck, girlfriend beating, drug addicted, absentee father, job screwing up, cash bleed on my parents, total mess of an overgrown adolescent younger brother to know 100% the way that I do, that removing financial support from your child and requiring them to attend therapy before you reinstate it, when they currently use your money to by drugs or take teenagers out on dates, is an act of parental kindness.

My brother now lives in a different city to his daughter and ex, and I see his ex and my niece every week at one of the playgroups I run. I have to watch my niece growing up without a father because my parents keep bailing him out and cashing him up. So he just keeps screwing around and not growing up. He was charged and convicted of grievous assault after choking, raping & beating his ex on many occasions and she was granted a 12 month restraining order following his conviction. He was supposed to attend rehab and she would have taken him back, but he was kicked out of rehab for starting a sexual relationship with another girl while he was there, and the two of them moved to Melbourne. My parents, the last time they visited Australia, chose to bypass Sydney altogether and just stay with my brother and his new girlfriend in the place where they pay rent for him to live. I guess they'd already paid for it so they might as well get their money's worth.

All that's happened is that they've enabled him to become a train wreck. I'm not doing that with my kids.

And I'm not having them abuse other people. If they have been abusing other people, I have zero tolerance for that. You gotta go to therapy and work that crap out or you get nothing from me. I will always support a child that wants help, but a child that just wants another fix, isn't going to get one from me. Because it is a horrible downward spiral and I know that first hand.

he is just saying that 90s music to kids today is like 50s and 60s music to us when we were kids, chronologically.

if you really want to nitpick it, i think the internet has created more of a buffer to lessen that gap than anything

Okay, I didn't know any of that. I'm sorry to hear that vix, it must be rough on you.

That said I think you missed my point: that at 21 ears of age, your kids will be fully independent adults who can do whatever the fuck they feel like and there's nothing you can do to stop them.

That's not a given - lots of kids are not independent by then - I wasn't, reprise wasn't, trots probably wasn't...

I'm giving my kids access to mental health care because nobody encouraged me to look after myself that way and I think it's essential.

For the most part I know there's nothing I can do - even now, there's very little I can do. My 9 year old is taller than some of my friends and wears men's size 9 shoes. I can't exactly send him to his room. If he doesn't want to go, he just stands there and there's nothing I can do about it except hit him. And I saw how that backfired with my little brother, so instead I try to talk things through with him and get him to understand how it affects our whole family when he is disrespectful to one of us. I tell him all the ways I structure my life around him and his brother and how I do that because I love them both so much and I ask him to have a think about how he has behaved and come to say sorry when he is ready.

My kids don't have a lot of reason to rebel because I devote a lot of my time to helping them problem solve when they want or need things that I can't provide or don't approve of (stuff like having an Xbox and playing first person shooter games, or high-sugar breakfast foods for instance)

So I hopefully won't be faced with hard choices when they are 21. But there are things that are completely unacceptable to me, and dating teenagers when you're 21, and using somebody else's money to by your illegal drugs, are two of them.
