I think this forum should start a life switching program where someone exchanges their life for the life of someone else for a period of at least a year. then they see if they like it.

if i look back three years my life and outlook has gotten considerably better. but if you had asked me each day i would have said nothing is improving.
being anyone else doesn't seem appealing. although i do wish i could just flip a switch and willingly change some things about myself. some physical. some emotional. |

The diagnosis is in the DSM and is generally accepted as valid. There is absolutely a controversy, and people absolutely fake it or otherwise think they have it when they don't, but the consensus is generally that it does in fact exist. Wiki has to present both sides of the debate and that is fair, but framing it like the sides have equal supporters is not accurate. If you look up DID in an academic database you will see that there are many, many more articles about DID diagnosis and treatment than there are about DID not existing. People with DID also generally have other disorders, in fact you would be hard pressed to find someone with DID who also does not or at least did not have PTSD in the past. Other common co-morbidities are BPD, MDD or Bipolar, and anxiety disorders including the aforementioned PTSD and others. This complicates diagnosis and treatment. I wrote some parts of this article and had many discussions about the fairness of it a couple of years ago. I spent a lot of time researching and writing for the article. I know a lot about the topic. The major thing that is sad to me about the controversy is that people with DID are constantly aware of the stigma and it does not help them accept it and contributes to their instability. On the other side, the media depicting it as existing like Sybil and The United States of Tara is generally inaccurate and also contributes to the stigma surrounding the diagnosis (in my opinion). I have yet to see an accurate representation of DID in the media. Last edited by reprise85 : 01-31-2015 at 02:50 AM. |

yeah me too. like no one's ever faked schizophrenia or thought they had it when they did it. and anyone who fakes it has other mental health problems and should be in therapy anyway.

Everyone knows there is no such thing as mental disorders, just people who want to get on welfare/give excuses for their failures in life.

I have to say when i DID see a shrink she basically thought that i was probably ok with my life. She gave me potential diagnosis and asked me what i thought of them... like i don't know you figure out what you may have k? Basically gave indications she might have thought i was just being lazy and/or satisfied with my life.
One psychiatrist who saw me once in the hospital specifically to give a diagnosis so my doctor could prescribe something said i most likely probably had Avoidant Personality Disorder though (I mean aside from my anxiety/panic problems) |

I had a therapist once who kinda implied I was being lazy and just didn't want to get a job. It bothered me a lot and I even had to talk about it later in therapy with my current therapist. Being depressed and not getting pleasure from things and being anxious to leave the house and whatever else does not equal lazy. |
