Because if his past though he actually can guess what traps the kid will set so he just avoids all of them and gets his hands on the kid and throttles him to death while he cries reliving moments of the first films in flashes (there they show footage of the first two but it's set to scary thriller music). He finally shouts out his anger and pain as the child gives his last breath and we see superimposed footage of the first when he touched his face with the aftershave, screaming. We can then see the kid he once was in his superimposed face and we understand then the happy careless childhood his parents (by forgetting him home) and the burglars robbed him of. His pain in this moment is, so to speak, made ours.

It's a more sinister take on the series. Then the other films in the "reboot" are about kids left Home Alone that he goes and murder.
