Why are we making people choose between traveling to work and eating 3 meals a day, and not making people choose between the mansion or the yacht is the real question here

I'm pretty sure that owning and maintaining a car, what with gas, insurance, registration, oil changes, maintenance etc, costs more than the cost of riding the bus for a month, although I could be wrong.

FYI I ride a bike to work so I save a shitload on all the above.

edit: assuming you own the car, and you aren't leasing, which of course is more $ per month.

It's really awful.

Look I've met a lot of people stuck in really bad poverty in San Diego specifically and basically the only difference between them and I, is that I have parents that can provide me a place to sleep and shower

That was in response to your quote. This one:

I'm basically right above the poverty line right now.

I'm not some super rich asshole if that's what you think.

edit: shit I've been stressing over whether I can make rent this month for the last week

you're putting words in my mouth

if you really want to be somewhere, you can make it. I've done it, without a car, or money, for years. The only thing in the way is yourself.

shit, you should be inspired by me, man.

If you have no money you can not make it to anywhere you want short of begging for change

As I said, it's not keeping people in poverty by itself, but it's part of a large list of factors

And just as I expected you're one of those "Get a job" bootstrapers

if you want to reduce the amount of cars on the roads, you could consider using taxes to make public transport cheaper, rather than building new roads.

making public transport free, especially for everyone, is not likely to be affordable.

I cant really afford public transport. I DO use it when theres absolutely no other choice (meaning its over an hour walk one way OR the weather is ungodly and i REALLY have to be somewhere, which is rare in my case but happens)

It's 5.50$ for a back and forth in montreal (one way is 3.25). Of course MOST people buy monthly or yearly passes but for me it would never be worth it. You have to use it everyday. It does keep me from going out of my neighborhood too much but poor people shouldn't expect to be able to afford going anywhere i guess....

Free public transport would be nice but probably very very unrealistic. Nobody would likely stand for the taxes hikes. Especially not those with cars.

Dream of glass. You are barking up the wrong forum with your "take responsibility for yourself" idea. This place is overrun by "pay me more for the same job...give me free transportation to my job...can't get my education...poor little ole me" lowlifes.

You wouldn't be saying that if someone gave you a car. You are saying that out of anger because you ride your bike around town.

I can see people using the cost as an excuse for not making it to jobs or wtvr, but really, it's just an excuse.
Maybe that person couldn't make the interview because they have kids to pick up from school and the bus takes too long. Or that fare money needs to go towards food for the day for their family. Or for medicine for themselves or their loved ones.

Why do people think because they did something that anyone can do it? It's not about making excuses for someone, it's about understanding the hardships some people face. Dream of glass and tootles can't wrap thier heads around that.

Social responsibilities have little to do with paying the entire way for everyone else. Especially sinking money entirely into a loss-leader.

Absurdist alert: I can't drive a vehicle, maybe I should demand someone else to pay a driver. /end absurdist
