worst part is i'm keeping facebook because i can network with netphorians

you just have to do it. life has gone on. people still think I see announcements or party invites but I laugh (years) after someone tells me I was invited to a party or wedding on Facebook. my sister uses it to post pictures of my niece and nephew. I remind her every year "sure would be nice to see some pictures... like in an email." I still get maybe one or two pics a year as she continues to post pics of them for "strangers". I don't miss it one bit. I even see people complain about Facebook all the time. Everyone I ask "should I join again?" says the same thing "fuck no, its just people divulging too much", complain complain comolain ect. You find out quickly who is willing to make effort to be your IRL friend and it also takes more effort on your part reaching out to people and inviting yourself to parties. do it and don't look back. twitter and Instagram are much more enjoyable and most of the time content worthy. I don't feel bad about missing out because people are missing out on me if they're so afraid of missing out wed be hanging out or talking on the regular. all my close friends adjusted. everyone else just hears rumors. that's fine. its a place for passive aggressive expression and slander from my memories of it. Almost 4 years now. Just do it.

not only are they divulging too much, all of that information is being fed into an algorythm to create more custom tailored junk mail, spam, banner ads, and eventually telemarketing. maybe in the future even television adverts will be individual. if we brought bill hicks back to life in that world he'd immediately kill himself.

i also feel like it's been codified to the point where posting anything that shows any kind of personality is faux pas. it has to be just nothing but good news, blurry pictures of people getting drunk, boring pics of your dumb children sent out en masse to people you went to high school with but were never friends with and spam

If anything it will make you more interesting to everyone. I have long conversations with people about meaningful things for the most part when I do see people because they don't have this baseline of assumption with knowing what's going on in my life. People try to piece things together or still assume but oh well. I actually only have twitter now and use it to keep in contact with 3 or 4 IRL friends, band people I became friends with and then random internet friends. My Instagram has been compromised so many times I give up until I can keep an account longer than 6 months. It is a nice feeling knowing only you know what's going on with you aometimes. I get the urge to want to share random crap sometimes but I figure I can show all my photos when I'm dead and whoever finds my laptop will have a treasure trove of whatever digital stuff I have. The interwebs will be the last to know I'm dead. No status updates. I'll remain the enigma I want to be that is too punk rock for Facebook. If I had a business or something to sell or promote I might consider one but I long to go back to days of my own website or blog. You can post stuff that way. Sure your audience may be small but it seems like no one gives a shit on Facebook either so why not go down low.

this happened to me once, only with an ex-coworker i had no other contact with. i eventually concluded that it recommends some people because you have random mutual friends but those mutual friends aren't listed because they are people who set their profiles to not show up on friend lists.

I had a life event that coincided with deleting my account and I don't regret it. I have plenty of friends that kept screenshots of the slander and libel shit.. all the stuff I can sue over still. People just end up humiliating and incriminating themselves on it. Its a go to for anyone who does something bad and dig up all their past transgressions. It just adds more shit for jeebus Christmas to look at when he's letting you into the champagne to in the sky.

good for you. i had a great time on facebook for a few years but it just seems like it should not be a given that once you sign up for social media it has to be mandatory until death. and i have no use for it anymore, except for messages. facebook messaging has not just replaced email but email itself has become shitty. i don't even know anyone's email address anymore, so leaving takes extra effort

I know a lot of the world cannot seem to function without it or has forgotten the days of texting or instant messengers like aim or ICQ or even google chat. I use google hangouts since it's part of android but I don't even use online messengers like MSN anymore where I used to be on 24/7. I would actually love to be able to have an account without all the ad intrusion involved now. Strip it all away and its still just an IM with a picture stream and status updates. I don't fault people for using it except that I find people quite quick to judge me for not being on Facebook as if it a hassle for them. its a hassle to find a way to sign up for an account or service without a Facebook account but thankfully many have alternative ways. Its too all inclusive. Like its supposed to be the center of everything online and everyone you know overshadowing every other way to communicate or share info. Its the go to for one stop everything. I constantly run into people who aren't aware I haven't been on it for four years yet begin their conversation "did you see my facebool post/update?" And I'm like..... Did you NOT see one from me for years? Seriously? That kind of full of oneself attitude of assuming I must know, they posted it for all to see... But they don't know who is there or who isn't there. I mean... I could rant but I dont really have a soapbox to stand on. I even shut off my cell phone for 8 months and used google voice/internet phones like a chode.

no you're right, facebook is all about navel gazing. it's really bad to be able to quantify social achievements for evil monkeys, i think. letting someone people know how many more people like the fact that they got married compared to fatty mc loser who just had 12 people pity like him for getting promoted

Yeah I even went through a time where I used Facebook for events a lot , which is probably the only thing it is legitimately useful for, and more than once failed to email the 4 non-Facebook people I knew out of sheer laziness

i deleted my facebook about 2-1/2 years ago. i had removed all of my information, photos, untagged myself everywhere and deleted people i wasn't still friends with a few months prior. i didn't use it for anything but killing time occasionally and the only palpable effect i noticed upon deleting it was that i suddenly had much less to do on the internet. i guess i wasn't really involved in facebook anyway--didn't use messenger, never really used it to plan events or find out about things to do...it was just useless for me. now that i have a smartphone i can use whatsapp to keep in touch with my family abroad but that hardly ever happens anyway.

if you gonna complain about facebook, then delete it. my older sister is the only one who gives me any grief about it because she's always posting updates and pictures of her kids. i told her to send me emails. i also don't have any friends so i guess i'm not exactly in the target audience.
