Well I'd offer to sell you some knives, but you seem content with your stainless steel chef's knife. I'd even bust out the lame jokes they'd try and get me to tell such as:

What note do you hear if you strike the Cutco blade against some random surface?

B sharp..because the blade will always be sharp..

And then they get dull and you have to ship them back to the factory to be sharpened. I can't believe I stuck it out a whole month with that company.

It's called a double d edge, it's not actually serrated. And he is gonna use that joke...he has five appointments today. I fucking hope there is no issue come Friday, the supposed payday. We've got a lot of debt...

oh yeah the double d edge. They look serrated though. I remember when I got one I really lightly touched my finger to it and slid it down the blade a little bit and it fucking cut me. I was also a really big dumbass who didn't think it could possibly be THAT sharp. But it is.

It's really not a bad gig if he has the charisma to be a salesman. But I don't have that. I was under the impression they had clients lined up and those were who I would go to. When I found out I had to get the clients myself I was just like.."I've made a huge mistake". I'm too shy for that shit.

Also something to note, the paychecks don't have taxes or anything taken out of them. So that might just be something to keep in mind come tax season or whatever.

We got married ths year so hopefully the return on that will make up for the lack of employment based returns, although that's doubtful. My husband is certainly not shy...I think the biggest problem will be lack of professional looking clothes. He has three outfits that will work, otherwise he's underdressed. I don't know how some people are comfortable enough to network like that...I certainly couldn't even sell drinks on a hot day. I don't hold eye contact.

hey I didn't even last a month. But I had to go to this conference once, and there were kids who were like 5 years younger than me who were making thousands of dollars a month. The dude who was my supervisor had paid off a brand new car in under a year. If you really like to do that sort of thing, it can be a really lucrative job.

And then at a certain point, they offer you positions as regional managers, so you make all your money from that instead of doing the door to door thing. I'm not sure how much people made doing that though.

Yeah I was not comfortable enough for it at all. My whole family is pretty introverted, so once I exhausted my parent's few friends and my few friend's parents, I was pretty much SOL. My supervisor was like "call anyone you have had a day's worth of contact with. Call your doctor, call your dentist, call the vet, call your town's fire and police department."

I was like, yeah I'm not calling the police to ask if I can sell them knives

It's not actually door to door but I am still suspicious of it. I can't wrap my head around this company continuing to pay for bust appointments. Eventually he'll have to sell or get fired, I figure, but they insist selling isn't a requirement. We know a bunch of people but they're all broke too. The manager at our location is only 19 and bought his second house IN CASH from this job. He was a machine, and he actually knew my husband socially a few years ago and has taken him under his (younger!) wing. He makes 6 figures a year managing knife sales. I have nooooo problem with that!!

Selling is a requirement if you want to make enough to live off it. The base pay depends on what level salesperson you are as does the commission percentage. I mean, if the base pay was like, $20 for an hour long appointment, and he goes on 8 appointments a day, that's basically a $20/hour job. But he could also run into the issue I did where you're out of people to call, and you're not comfortable enough calling strangers. Then he's fucked, unless he can become a manager before that happens.

I ended up just quitting and delivering pizzas. In a town whose main economic source is its two colleges, I could make decent bank on the weekends, especially if there was a concert or something. It ruined my social life senior year, but it was worth it to be able to have a decent amount of money to pay my bills and go out on the nights I was free.

it's high effort/low reward. it's also antiquated in the digital age. it's also kind of rude to walk up to my house and try to sell me something. there are much much better sales jobs. like when people call you to order a computer. most of the time d2d sales is magazines and bullshit like knife sets

i make thousands of dollars a month btw but i'm still pretty poor

I'm sure there are better sales jobs..this was just the one I ended up finding. I also don't have the personality to be a salesperson, so no matter what sales job I'd find, I would probably not be very good at it.

Also what do you do that makes you thousands of dollars a month?

Well he sold $178 worth of knives today, and he's only done two of his five appointments...I'm actually impressed. His base pay for appointment is $15, but if the 10% comission makes him more than that, that is what he gets. Yay! Guess this isn't really a bitch anymore He has at least 5 more lined up through Wednesday

how long is each appointment, like does he spend more than hour typically. does he get paid for it if he doesn't sell anything?

He gets the $15 if he doesn't sell anything. Depending on the salesperson an appointment is like, 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. I hated doing it so I tried to keep it under an hour

Yeah he gets 15 for just having the appointment, regardless of sales. The appts are about 45 minutes.

Do you actually go in to the call center to work or is it done from home? I've thought about a job like that but this house is too loud to do anything here.

you're really that unfamiliar with one of the most basic jobs in the marketplace?

how long does it take to get back and forth to these appts, and he uses gas to do so right

Gas, plus the like, $127 you have to pay to get the demo kit. Then I'm not sure if ILP's husband's supervisor will do the same thing, but my supervisor wanted me to call him before, during and after each appointment. And then he would also randomly call me throughout the week and spend like, 20 minutes at a time on the phone. It ended up bumping up my phone bill by a few dollars.

so basically it's a minimum wage job in which you put miles and wear on your car, potentially irritate people by invading their property and sometimes make a lot less than minimum wage?

sounds like a great opportunity, you're right

Yeah, those are all the reasons I was bad at it. I was too aware of all the negative aspects of it.
But some people don't care about that shit, and they are the ones who can make a good opportunity out of it.

you weren't bad at a shitty job, and no. they'd be better off selling vacuum cleaners at sears.

Maybe. I just stay away from sales altogether now. I'd rather just do the shitty work that comes along with a steady job.

i don't do sales either but like i said, sales positions that require all of that are not worth it at all. you can sit in a call center and sell leads and be rewarded better than 15 dollars an appt 5 appts a day and 10% commission on something that apparently doesn't cost much

if you want to get started in sales, wait tables
