I had one manager at Einstein Bros. tell me his philosophy on management: "you keep the customers happy, the customers keep me happy, and i keep you happy."

He is one of the only managers that actually behaved like this too, and all too often in retail, the workers suffer the wrath from both ends.

but you have to keep up your side of the deal or it will never work. being late every day is something that impacts the customers which forces the employer to make a value judgement: is the increased unemployment insurance going to cost less than the lost business due to you being a fuckup? They made their decision and I hate to break it to you, the union ain't gonna help you very much.

You obviously have a lot of growing up to do if you're think you're entitled to behave like this. you remind me of the bratty suburbanite 19 year olds i worked with at mcdonalds who didn't last a week because they never learned any concept of responsibility.

There was this kid who used to work here and didn't want to work on memorial day and called an associate (not me or the managers) the morning of. When confronted about this the next day he said someone told him we didn't have to work on holidays. When we said he knew he worked, because he saw the schedule the week before and called out, his rebuttal was if the managers don't work on holidays why should he. I felt really bad for him, he has no concept of his own responsibility and is just concerned with what he thinks other people should be doing.

elph i think people here are hard on you BUT showing up late constantly does make people mad if they have to stay and cover for you. people have shit to do. kids, other jobs. taking caring of family. or w/e. people absolutely resent when kids are nonchalant about coming in on time because they dont have any other responsibilities and think no one else does

p.s. i'd never work in the deli at my store. it's brutal. any other dept.

This is totally true and in previous jobs I've had being late could be a serious dick move.

Elph, you're seriously outta line. I've worked my way up at a grocery store as high as I possibly can, and I'm under a union too, but the management is always breaking union guidelines left and right... And I bring it up to the union and they can't do squat because theres always loopholes for the management. The union will always say: "Yeah, that's not allowed, but the management will just claim this or that and they had no other choice, and therefore its allowed"

Pretty much the unions just there so you can't get fired for a no-good reason, like a manager having some personal vendetta against you. But if you're consistently showing up 15 minutes late , no-showing to work and shit, they have every right to can yer ass.

Elph: a funny story that relates to your predicament:

I booked a day off of work cause I had Pearl Jam tickets and for some reason my company screwed me and booked me that day anyways. So of course I decided to call in sick. I started work at 9PM that night. The head manager left at 5 that day so I made sure to call in sick after he left. I was out downtown with my buddy, getting plastered, smoking blunts before I had to call in. So I finally step aside with like an hour left of grace time for an allowed call in, try and get my shit together and call in on my Cell and theres no answer... Nothing. I call in every 15 minutes and nothing... the lines are down.

I literally had to call a buddy who lived near by, offer to give him 20 dollars to go down to the store and tell them I was sick and that I couldn't call in... Buddy went down, all was fine... they didn't even care to speak with me..

I work a shit job too, but theres just basic guidelines you have to abide by... Even if you don't give a shit
