As we haven’t posted anything in awhile and haven’t been playing shows I thought it was important to update everyone on what is going on with us as a band. Currently we are writing music for our next record. It has been going really well. Considering we live in two different states and all have full time jobs with different schedules, its has been going really well and surprisingly fast for us. We are gonna continue to lay low for a bit while writing and hopefully start to try out new material at shows when we feel prepared in the future.

Full time jobs...hmmmmm....

Living in different states? Doesn't sound like a good idea for a band.

I think Byrnes just teaching music now, which is still a pretty sweet gig.

Jimmy Chamberlin would have been Frank Zappa's greatest drummer.

That's a weird thing to say considering that he had the greatest drummer...Vinnie Colaiuta >>>

LOL. As if bill had Nicole and Mikes schedule filled 12 hrs per day 365 days a year and they were Calling in sick to work or something.

Between 2009 and 2011 Jeff was in college. Way to give 110% Schroeder!

Jeff quit his phd and moved to chicago and even helped with the archives. Jeff was even doing fan meetups in korea while they were on hiatus.

As I was saying - frankly stated, I call BS on Nicole saying she gave 110% to SP. You don't go simultaneously starting the Cold and Lovely, recording two albums, touring for them, shooting videos, etc, and then say you're giving 110% to SP, all the while using the band name as a means of promoting your pet project. I'm sure she was focused when she was with SP, but in the words of Meghan Toohey, I doubt Billy wanted another "cathartic" experience recording MTAE as there was with recording Oceania. Billy has been in the biz a long time and I think has an intuitive sense of what SP demands to push to where he wants to take it.

Same thing with Mike and Bearcubbin.
Gotta agree with you man. Corgan did these guys the ultimate favor. He hired a couple nobodies to write music with and to tour around the world in his world famous band and the first thing they wanna do is start getting their own projects off the ground?

Corgans a known ego-maniac... You think they would have had the wits to not even bother and just enjoy their time making a living as a musician. It's really pretty odd when you think about it... Jeffs been devoted and put all his musical energy into SP and he's still around.

Where was jeff on the cruise? Or at the SPRC meet-ups?

I knew when Billy chose Mike out of the dozens (if not hundreds) of other candidates that he had made a mistake, and that had nothing to do with Mike's abilities but because of the HUGE age gap between the two.

At the time Billy was in his 40s and Mike was 19 and it just screamed desperation on Billy's part to form another quirky band like what he had presented in the 90s with the original line up. The fact that he subsequently hired a(nother) bass player with tits showed that Billy was searching for something that didn't exist.

I'm not surprised that that line up dissolved, though I am surprised at how it dissolved (apparently due to apathy on Mike's and Nicole's parts, which seems odd to me since they had sweet cushy gigs).

The drums on Oceania are light years better than the new crap.

Eh, they're better, but MTAE's songs don't require more from the drums than what they are. Oceania's drumming was solid, but there's points in it where it felt mechanical and out of place.

Oceania drumming was made by computers - thy had to resample all of Mikey's playing

I disagree that they're better. The intro to quasar should have the same punch that the intro to Cherub Rock has when JC starts crashing with the snare and crash pattern, since that's obviously what Billy was going for, but instead it sounds like someone throws a basketball into the room as Billy plays

I think it has less to do with the playing and more to do with the poor drum sound on Oceania. Oceania has by far the worst sounding drums of any SP album. The playing was OK, but the way they recorded the drums just sounds cheap.

There was an old interview that was...revealing

Apparently they recorded the cymbals separately and sampled them in, and the cymbals definitely sound weird on the record.

They also did some nonsense where they took the isolated snare track, put a speaker down onto the snare head, played the track back again, and used that.

So yeah it was all pieced together in a computer, it seems

I'm listening to Quasar again. Yeah, his playing isn't that bad at all here. Not a big fan of his style and fills, but it fits pretty nice here.

But those cymbals sound so weird
