Trying to think about rape is a fucking moral quagmire, which I think is slunken's point (although I see everyone getting ready to pounce on him and white knight the shit out of him for not being anti-rape or something). It's easy to point to rape when one person if forcing another at the point of a knife, but that's not how most rape happens by the definition we are struggling to outline today.


I have had an experience where I got drunk to the point that I hooked up with a female I would not have ever have hooked up with in sobriety, and I am willing to bet this is very, very common amongst men. Although she had a few drinks too, I had consumed like 12 beers and was not in any semblance of my right mind. She had been hanging out with me for hours and knew how much I had. She made the move on me.

I do not feel raped, and have never even thought to place this situation in the context of rape except in discussions like this. I look back with a bit of a humorous cringe and think to myself holy shit why did I do that. But I don't feel violated. After that I hooked up with her a second time sober although I was then torn between not wanting to repeat what I already saw as a mistake and the carnal desire for sex. I do not harbor any ill feelings towards the girl, and I do not believe at any point she felt like she was doing anything wrong, nor do I think she did anything wrong. In fact I feel a bit guilty for hooking up with her twice and then ignoring her after that because I think she really liked me. Is this rape? The way most of us define rape (lack of consent or inability to give it) would certainly make this rape. Can it be rape if I don't feel like I was raped?

On top of that, let's go back to the issue of how often things like this happen to men. If I told this story from a female perspective and simply change the girl into a guy, it immediately sounds very rapey. But because it was the girl that came on to me and I was the one who was smashed, it just seems a lot less like rape, which I understand is because of our social conditioning, but I think most people would apply those ideas, maybe not even consciously, to situations like this.
