Either the suits in New York really wanted to undermine the show at the expense of profits for their own political agenda, or this whole thing is a publicity stunt. If its the former, then the suits catered and caved to the GLAAD demands and misread the backlash to follow because they have an insulated view of the public that is brainwashed by the mainstream media's acquiescence to a minority which does not wish to engage the opposition in this case about the specifics of what is regarded as sin, only to silence them by force of political correctness.
