it's not that you can't reflect on being dead (although of course, you can't). It's that you're functionally alive while you're alive, and since that is what you perceive, you are always alive. so it's not that there's nothing so you can't reflect on being nothing; it's that there is always something.

But if you are not aware of not existing, the fact that you do not exist (when death happens and after) does not exist in a practical sense. Are you dead? Yes. But you can't perceive. All you will ever know is of you existing. So, in a practical way, if you can only perceive existing then you exist.

This is sort of solipsistic I guess and not quite what I'm going after. Yes, you don't exist anymore in ongoing reality. But ongoing reality is not your reality anymore; the only reality you have is the one you did exist in.
In a practical way, you are dead. Everyone but you can perceive it that all that's left of you are ashes. And lacking a consciousness because YOU ARE DEAD means you wouldn't remember that you ever existed in the first place. A dead body knows nothing.

Always? That's what I'm trying to say - once you drop dead "you" can't know that you ever existed, there is no you, just dead meat.

I don't really disagree with this either.

You're right of course, I guess what I'm unsure of is how our perception of time exists in the moment before/of death.

Although I know there's no reason to think that it changes at all. Have you ever had trauma where time has slowed down? Of course if you weren't alive you couldn't perceive the slowdown after your brain stopped working, but I feel as if I could be in that moment forever. Who is to say I'm not in that moment right now?

Honestly I agree with you I'm just trying to put it in a positive light. If there is nothing after death, and all you perceive is life, life is all there is in a practical way.

Slowed down? Not sure I know what you mean.
Besides drug experiences, I saw everything in actual slow motion once, for maybe 10 minutes.
And the opposite when I felt I'd drown and swallowed loads of sea water, that was a rather speedy experience. Other than that, probably not.

I had this one experience once where I was with my ex-bf/pedophile/sociopath/etc guy. This must have been a few years into our relationship.

So he'd threaten to kill me. A lot. Like multiple times a day. He had a bunch of knives; this one in particular was pretty damn long and it had a compass on the hilt end of it.

So he was holding it over me and saying he was going to kill me, and then himself, and how upset I made him; how horrible I was; how this was our inevitable demise.

And then I begged him to kill me.

Begged and begged.

And time stopped.

It felt like out of some movie where the main character can stop time and walk through the scene while everyone else is frozen. Like I walked through our house, and pet our cats, and walked outside into the woods and screamed that I was dying.

It felt like this was about 3 hours long.

When I came back to reality he was laughing at me.

Anyway. Ahem. Time is funny for me. I regularly have periods of time I don't remember. Like, weekly or more often. Not sure if that makes me less qualified to discuss eternity/death/time/life or more? Probably less.
