a lot of kids love it. one of mine does; the other has twice vomited it back up onto his plate after being told if he didn't eat it he wouldn't get any dessert. If I mash it up and mix it into his other food, he's fine with it. It's the texture that he can't stand.

The generally accepted theory is that some people actually have a gene that makes some vegetables taste more bitter than they do to others. In other words what you taste when you eat broccoli isn't the same thing someone with the gene will taste.

It's not really gone from dislike to like, but I really like tofu now whereas I usually hadn't even tried it that much before last year.

Mashed up and mixed with other food, vegetables are easier to digest and cause less severe reactions. If he gets mouth tingling and actually VOMITS, he might be allergic.

He might be, I hadn't thought about it. The first time I thought he'd just wound himself up over it, but the second time I decided even if it was a psychological thing, it wasn't worth it to keep putting it on their plates.

And yes my kids have to eat their veggies before they get dessert. You know what they didn't have in the 50s? A childhood obesity epidemic. Old school parenting ftw, in some situations.

If you're still giving the dessert you are not helping them stay thin unless you believe broccoli contains magical fat burning compounds
it just seems like a silly thing to say to someone to me
like just give them dessert or not don't threaten to take it away from them in exchange for something

if you're not hungry enough for vegetables, you're not hungry enough for anything, is the message in my house. If you're hungry enough to finish a healthy dinner, a small dessert won't do you any harm.

dessert in my house is often fresh fruit salad and unsweetened yohurt with cinnamon.

So the message for life is; in the evening eat a balanced meal. If you're still hungry, or feel like something else have some fruit and yoghurt. If you're not hungry enough to finish your meal, don't go and eat something else just because you like the taste of it. My kids are skinny.

and they eat a huge breakfast every morning - omelette made with butter and cheese on wholegrain toast, wholegrain oatmeal with berries, unsweetened yoghurt, banana, wheatgerm and milk, and herbal tea.

and a massive lunch; sandwiches on wholegrain bread, cut fruit, dried fruit, nuts, yoghurt, carrot sticks and hummus, rice crackers...

so they're often not hungry for their dinner. that's fine. but they're not having something else if they don't finish their dinner. no big deal, really.

no way, I don't knit. I've tried but I can't, I don't have the time or patience...my creative/rote hand movement craft/skill is playing piano and organ.

I had pea and haloumi fritters tonight, and fennel and orange salad...and I've changed my mind about fennel just in the last couple of days. I just needed to find the right combination, and finely sliced raw fennel, segmented oranges, sliced and pitted kalamata olives, white wine vinegar and olive oil, are apparently it. YUM. The pea and haloumi fritters were great too, but I love peas and haloumi so it wasn't so much of a breakthrough.
