this was MIT not harvard and it was a true story.

i work in a casino, actually i work in the function spaces that are on the floor above the main gaming floor and very rarely ever have to walk through the gaming floor (and even then only ever on the way through to whatever is on the other side of the floor).

has anyone ever noticed that casino carpet is totally fucked up, on purpose? i'm damn sure it's designed that way to keep you disoriented... same reason you'll never see a window in a casino. it's to keep you completely disconnected from the real world so that you have less reminder to get on with your life.

yep - and bright/clashing colours. that plus all the noise from different machines etc. i'm certain it's all a way to throw out your sense of time/space and keep you gambling.

it's called psychological design and it's used pretty much everywhere

offices are muted grays and blues to keep people's head down and not visually distracted, schools were designed often as bomb shelters and often share design features with prisons (to control large populations of unruly people), casinos are distracting to keep people in them and entertained, all that kind of stuff is not unusual and is done deliberately
