When I hear "nerd" I think of a person who has an obsessive interest and is successful in things that have academic value. To me, collecting comic books doesn't make you a nerd. To call those people nerds either overstates the value of comics, or diminishes the real value of being smart. The word geek came into use for this purpose.

A comic book geek reads, collects and knows a lot about comic books.
A comic book nerd does his doctoral dissertation on them.

The point I was making is that people are generally less skeptical of such claims when they're made by men.

"whore with glasses" is definitely an obvious flag that these are just some angry sexually frustrated socially inept dudes pissed that a conventionally attrative woman is claiming the social tag that rightfully should match her with them but never will
