due to my own cowardice, i have led her to believe certain things about my feelings which are simply not true.

i have been ambivalent about the relationship for a good portion of the time we've been together, and i haven't been honest with my lukewarm feelings. she was (reasonably) under the impression that i was in it for the long haul, but it's nearly impossible for me to envision the future i want for myself, much less a future for myself that she is a part of.

we discussed the prospect of a trial separation and going to couples therapy once a week, but i came to the conclusion that no trial separation of any length or therapy of any kind was going to help me make the decision.

to continue the relationship without making an emotional commitment has the same material consequences as purposefully leading her on. and a commitment needs to be made either way. so instead of committing to the idea of staying (impossible), i committed to the idea of leaving.

i think it's for the better. we have no children, we're still relatively young. there was no right time to fire this cannon.
