The level of activity on a given board can probably be predicted by a few parameters. Like, there has to be a critical value such that if the board activity exceeds that level (which would be a function of posts per user per day and number of active users) it sustains itself indefinitely provided the users never die and aren't impeded by malware and server issues.

Netphoria has obviously been plagued by server issues and shitty ads. It's hard to say whether the positive net attrition of active users is directly attributable to any one of these, but given the nature of the internet in general, I actually doubt many newbs are actually put off by the acerbic treatment by veterans.

It still creates an unnecessarily high barrier to access.

also it doesn't give the best impression

besides the fact that slunk practically missed the golden years of this board when there were many active, hilarious and snarky posters and i was at my most doggedly mean

True, although that can be rolled up into high barrier for access.

I kind of long for the days when IRC was all the rage and you'd just sit in the channel all day even if you were at school or work or whatever.

there were funny moments for sure. i will always be most proud of "hacking" the board and having pakula threaten to sue where all us slc folk worked. tomfoolery was fun when i wasnt old and crotchety.

how did netphoria acquire its reputation for meanness anyway? i remember joining the oboard in 2001, and while they had their fair share of shitheads and misfits too and were generally nothing like the collective of noobs and fawning simpletons it is now, they still spoke about netphoria like it was on another level of depravity and actively discouraged people from coming here, so it makes me wonder if some shit went down in the early years that i missed. feels like a feud that's never been resolved.

We all hated each other, new people, Trots was an amazing troll of hate, etc. oh and mostly we called out Corgan for being a douche and openly spread album leaks.

There were amazing arguments back then, lots of people knew each other off the board, more girls posted here (they really didn't get along with each other), Cactuar, Samsa, etc.
