Qualifying form doesn't count for much in the World Cup, there's been several eventual winners who've struggled into the competition and of course many host nations won despite having played no competitive games for two years prior. The big teams know the way qualifying competitions are seeded and organised for them means they don't have to play full pelt there.

Portugal anyway are consistently lazy as anything during qualifying but, come the tournaments, they've been consistently one of the best teams around in recent times. They won't crash in that group.

i realize that. i think it's funny because uninformed US football fans thought he should be a shoe-in. i'm not exactly the most well-read on the sport but given that he's 32 and his performance has been in decline, it's not surprising.
