So Dexter's punishment is self imposed exile? Because he hurts the people around him... kind of like he's a brooding, morose superhero.

i didn't think it was so bad. it's way better than his dying (suicide or otherwise) or going to jail. at least now i can wonder if he ever leaves his self-imposed exile to one day be with hanner or take up a relationship with jamie for whatever reason. the world is his oyster.
and i am almost glad i came around to quinn in the final episode. i wonder if they meant to do that. |

what a supremely shitty ending. Wasn't expecting much more, but still, that was impressively and monumentally bad. I felt nothing when Deb died, it should have happened much earlier. How Dexter was able to turn her switch off without anyone even coming by to check what's going on was already ridiculous, but how he could just carry her body out of the hospital into a place that was crowded with hospital employees was beyond retarded.

"Not watching Dexter? Well, who can blame you. At this point, the only people still watching are life-hating masochists like me who grimly cling on to each new arid, inert, incident-free episode just because they've already sat through seven and a half godforsaken years of this tripe and they feel a wrongheaded sense of duty to discover how it ends. Worse, like me, they may even still harbour a forlorn speckle of hope that Dexter will be able to come up with an ending that feels both satisfying and earned, even though nothing that has happened in the past four years has suggested that this will actually be the case."

Also, Deb kicked the bucket off camera... why? She's the second most important character on the show and she died off camera? That felt kind of awkward and clunky. The fact that Dexter committed murder in the police station and was allowed to walk out was also obsurd. The show has constantly presented silly situations that the viewer is supposed to not question. Like other serial killers walking into the police department to fuck with Dexter. Or Dexter having access to the evidence room to fuck with cases all the time, but never getting caught. Killing someone on camera inside police holding is just dumb. I think the series may have ended better if they'd stopped at the end of season 7 with Deb Killing LaGuerta. |

you would have been way more satisfied if it ended at season 2

My bad. I meant that the last time you see Dexter talking to her she seems like she's recovering. Then she "takes a turn for the worse," but it's all off camera. And the next time you see her she's a vegetable, ie. brain dead. They even tell Dexter that she'll never wake up. I didn't take him unplugging her as Dexter killing Deb. She was already gone.
Dexter dumping her in the Ocean felt really forced, and nearly as awkward as the terrible CGI "storm on the horizon" which itself was a horribly blatent metaphore. I assumed it was a way of showing that Dexter felt her death was directly his fault. That she ended up just another victim of his table. Which is supposed to help us make sense of the fact that he banished himself to a logging camp in the Pacific Northwest as punishment. |

How the fuck did he survive the ending? I didn't see any fake wreckage on his boat when he was cruising out into the storm. Did he have another boat anchored out there or something?

If batman can survive a nuclear bomb blast I think a serial killer can survive a stupid storm.

i liked:
how dexter dumped deb, realizing she was another victim how he didnt end up with a happy ending i didn't like: the implausible shit all through the episode... taking deb out of the hospital, killing saxon on camera, the bomb scare. shit there's so much of it the big wasted potential here is that this last season had nothing to do with dexter possibly getting caught or having any punishment. throughout the series, the big sustaining drama was will dexter get caught? that was what was leading through so many seasons, and then in the end the season is all about hannah mckay and will she get caught and be arrested again. derp derp who cares about hannah mckay jesus christ also why wouldn't people question where harrison is when dexter goes to the hospital without him?! |

at the very least they should have had deb die a while ago and made dexter freak out about it for half a season. he really didn't seem upset hardly at all. they could have had dexter purposefully plan out harrison going with hannah with no intention of following them, for example. i just dont understand how they thought this was a good season/ending

it's called...suspension of disbelief. because it's fictional. y'know.
i also thought about the wave thing though. but if they'd filmed it in a realistically choppy water tank then a bunch of viewers would get seasick and nobody would know what's going on. |

suspension of disbelief only goes so far. like the hundreds of serial killers that apparently live in miami in the world of dexter. okay, suspend disbelief. he can look up forensic stuff on his computer and no one ever wonders why he looks up people who wind up missing. suspension of disbelief. but when you do things like make harrison go with hannah only so dexter has already gotten rid of his son so he can fake his own death... basically, if you use suspension of disbelief constantly to move the plot along, there's a basic problem in the writing. not everything has to make sense, but at least try to make it make sense most of the time. it's like the writers stopped even caring about making it at all coherent

well i expected it to be much worse. it ended as well as you could hope for, considering the post season 4 stuff. again, everything felt rushed and crammed in there
the exile thing was a little ehhh but it makes sense. maybe the epilogue could've been more fleshed out. like show old man dexter having come to grips with his past or something i'm surprised i didn't take it harder than i did, the show has a special place in my heart because it reminds me of when i was first living on my own with a shitty tv playing my stack of dexter dvds on my ps2. but i've accepted the show isn't what it used to be so i guess i've made my peace a long time ago |
