This reminds me: At orientation for work (and subsequent annual inservices), we are encouraged to greet fellow employees in the hallway even if we don't know them to foster a friendly environment so patients see us as friendlier and more approachable. Around the same time every day, I head to the cafeteria and almost every I see another employee heading out and say hello. Never once has this woman said hello back or even acknowledged me, without fail she'll use the moment to pull out her phone or to suddenly find the floor fascinating until we pass each other. Today, she pulls out her phone on cue right as I say hello so I start looking down at mine and purposely run into her. She was super annoyed but when I said I didn't see her, she couldn't say shit back because if she did she'd have to admit she just ignored my saying hello and would look like a bitch. So she just made a huffy noise and walked off. I stand by it.

I'm not the most social person but come the fuck on, bitch. Just be a decent person for five seconds.

Hah, oh man, the number of people at my old job who would flat out ignore me (and all security staff) as I walked by them in the halls. It would fill a fucking auditorium. I was a ghost. The company was half scientists and half admin staff. I can count on maybe two hands who, out of a thousand, would ever talk to me or even say hi.

Horribly snotty, middle-aged, socially-inept bores.

I realize probably a majority of security people are fucking creeps but, it's funny, the people who would chat with me every day - more than a few were like "Man, you're totally unlike a typical security guard" because I was not threatening and I read books. A few I keep in regular contact with (on FB).

well, this is assuming the person had it before. i think many people who don't have common courtesy just don't have whatever it is that makes us want to make each other feel good - basically, they're antisocial (in the classic sense - basically "anti-society"

as far as abandoning it - righteous anger (or what the person sees as righteous anger), impatience, having a bad day, projection (as in they project you doing the same to them so they do it back).

really there could be all sorts of reasons
