i saw both versions, and can appreciate both. i prefer the latter US version. like graveflower mentioned it was the same director. i like michael pitt a lot. i was also disappointed at the lack of naomi watts pink bits, because she is pure joy to look at in a misogynistic way. haneke is kind of a douchebag from interviews i've read with him, but i like the weird fuckers anyway.

antichrist bordered on silly to me. it was kind of hard to take seriously. maybe it was the dafoe factor. i wish more torture flicks were as intelligent as martyrs was. i finally saw the unrated version which was sweet. |

yeah, it's pretty... weird. the fact that the book was turned into a movie was kind of weird to begin with. for it's time, it was pretty bold. i guess there are quite a few different versions of it. another one of those movies showing the brutality and ugliness that has happened/happens all the time.

yeah, i think he comes off pretty pretentious in his statements and interviews, hence the douche remark. but if you know him on a personal level being your professor i really don't know the guy so i don't know. film school in itself seems pretty pretentious.

Wut? Different versions? I was talking about Pasolini's movie from 1976, the one that was forbidden for 15 years or something. There are other movies as well? Oh no, I guess one of those is more than enough for me. Only 10 minutes in, and I want to puke.

hah, well i get ya either way. no dispute, gaspar noe makes films purely for his own gratification and would probably agree that it is all for his own satisfaction. he seems to revel in displeasing people as well. i kind of like his attitude about it. i would highly recommend 'enter the void' if you haven't seen it yet. i find it beautiful and surreal and only mildly disturbing. irreversible is too bleak to really recommend anyone watch it other than for the shock value. no replay value there either.

i'm surprised you thought antichrist was no good. i mean i guess i'm not. i just thought it had more... to say than irreversible. but tbh i really think the homophobia (not the exactly right word but you know what i mean) at the beginning turned me off immediately. and nothing he or anyone else says will make me think that's not what that was. |

i thought antichrist was okay. it was just sillier to me, and not as shocking as i really wanted it to be. i did like it though! there are just some of the more serious moments of the movie that i ended up giggling at, which i think was the opposite reaction that von trier was looking to provoke.
enter the void is definitely dizzying and has some crazy camera shots that make me still wonder how he pulled off. it is a druggy/hazy movie for sure. i think that kind of homophobic attitude does exist, but i don't think portraying it in a film is necessarily glamorizing it or promoting it. that's all i'm really saying. there is definitely homophobic and misogyny and straight up vile disgusting behavior in it. i don't think his films promote or advocate hate or encourage that kind of behavior at all. i really think it's for shock value and the same as gangster rap artists using the excuse about "we're just talking about what goes on in the street". though the rap analogy is rather weak because we all know those dudes live that shit for the most part. if films on ugly subject matters are approached, don't you think a director that gives you the blood, guts and all approach is being more honest and unflinching than being protected from the realities of a situation? if i see something about on hitler, for instance, i want to be shocked that he was quite human and normal in some regards along with all the unthinkable shit he did without any censorship. i know there's a difference between doing a documentary on hitler and a straight piece of eye-candy-shock-fiction but i like the uncensored artist. i wanna see the cock. i wanna see the cum shot. i want to see someone get hit. i want to hear the word 'cunt'. i guess that's why i like UFC boxing too. |

I got a lot out of Antichrist but I'm not in a hurry to watch it again.
Also, I'm over torture porn. It's not shocking any more, it's just disgusting. God, enough already. |

i think everyone feels that way about torture porn. it's been a beaten dead horse. i was surprised to see a hostel 3, let alone a hostel 2. i wonder if there will be a 4th if there isn't already.

Inside was borderline torture porn I reckon. I watched it because wasn't it the same guy that did Haute Tension? Which I really liked. But inside wasn't as interesting I thought.
Glad I'm not the only one over the torture porn, maybe they'll eventually stop making it? |

Haute Tension was okay for a couple reasons but the twist didn't make a lot of sense.

I assume you guys are talking about the 2007 Inside? The pregnant woman and shitloads of blood? I guess I didn't get that one, cause what exactly is the point of the movie? It's just red? I don't think we reached the end of torture porn. 40 years of that stuff already, and apparently it sells. |
