Hm, interesting. I never looked at Trier - or Noé - that way. Probably because horror movies mostly make me laugh or bore me, whereas Trier is one of my favourite directors.

i think comparing it to spicy food is on point:

it's not so much about wanting pain, but the specific flavor of the pain.

dig?

You have a severely limited definition of horror

theres plenty without knives... but most that come to mind have some cutting at one point or another. i guess there are so many subgenres with netflix generation. its like ambient dubstep / psychological petting zoo thrillers. horror has many iterations from campy b movies to blood guts gore festivals to troma comedy tit popping stuff and newer torture porn type movies like hostel and martyrs.. theres the poltergeists and exorcists, candyman.. there lots of good creepy stuff out there. i really enjoyed fido recently, which is pretty much a zombie comedy.

Noyen, yes, Trier shows the human horror - but I don't put his films and the ring or chainsaw movies into the same genre. Semantics, that's all.

alien is fantastic noir style horror. aliens and alien 3 aint bad either. aliens being way more action and alien 3 being a bit more dark and charachter driven.

tromeo and juliet, toxic avenger.. troma stuff is all pretty over the top hilarious and not so serious as something like the shining. 'it' is fantastic and has the best creepy clown performance ever by tim curry. theres a million good films. im a big fan of romeros stuff, dawn, day, night of the dead original stuff even though some of the remakes are decent.

Well, in terms of film genres I stick to European "definitions": Trier - Scandinavian cinema, Candyman - horror.

Yeah recently rewatched first 2 hellraisers. 1 one is a pretty good film period. 2 one takes a big technical quality dip but damn it's trippy and cool

Didn't you say Monster is your favourite movie, reprise? If you're up for something like that, Scandinavian cinema or maybe Cronenberg's Baby of Macon and Greenaway might be your thing.

i love horror, at the moment more than i ever did.

martyrs is fantastic, i don't see the 'torture porn' aspect of it though. torture, yes.

martyrs blew me away. to me it had so much more meaning, a real message, a point to the movie.. as opposed to something like hostel.

i do just mean torture.. i call it all torture porn if thats the angle of the movie. the suffering / torment stuff being the primary focus. not that it has anything to do with pornographic sex. more that its the glorification of suffering, physical and mental torture. do you know of any other movies similar to martyrs? that one really stands out to me as reaching a pinnacle of just awesome intensity. i guess funny games is similar.

Irreversible is worthless misogynistic, homophobic, sadistic, bullshit masturbation. No one should watch that movie.

Martyrs is great. Antichrist is... maybe kinda great but also misogynistic, imo.

I kinda wanna say Inside but that might qualify as some straight up torture porn unless you really wanna give it the benefit of the doubt.

Did you watch the original or the US remake of Funny Games? I think the original is way better. Benny's Video isn't bad either.

Question

Has anyone seen 120 Days of Sodom? I tried several times to watch it, but after an hour I just can't take it anymore. I've never seen anything like that.
