I think a lot of it too is related to hyper-self-awareness where we're constantly scrutinizing our appearances, beliefs, interests... comparing ourselves to celebrities, etc... plenty of people never outgrow that phase and I can't necessarily place all of the blame on individuals. There is pressure to say "fuck whoever I am, I'm going to assimilate"
