Canada's broadcasting regulator has received more than 3,000 responses from the public about its plan to change a regulation that prohibits the dissemination of false or misleading news, most of them passionately opposing the proposal.

The comments are posted on the website of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.

Just because a person can not be charged criminally for promoting false beliefs, I don't believe that should in any way prohibit the CRTC as regulator from revoking a broadcast licence for broadcasting false information. Not everyone is entitled to a broadcast license. The Zundel ruling seems like a red herring for those who want to remove these provisions. Maybe Mr. Lee and the rest of the committee members should be receiving some emails.

Well, Mr Lee you and your fellow committee members had batter come up with much better wording and find a way that prevents out and out lies and misrepresentation from being issued by "news" outlets such as Sun TV News. This issue has been quiescent for almost 15 years, why push it now? There has to be an inexpensive way to chase people who lie in the media and it should not be through the the usual Courts with the huge costs involved going that route. What seems to be wrong, frankly, was that the Charter allows lies and misrepresentation as freedom of expression - it is that problem that should be addressed and not abolishing the current sensible rule followed by the CRTC.

Jesus Christ, these people adhere to a standard of capitalization and punctuation the likes of which I've never seen in a comment section! I don't even know what quiescent means! For profit news obviously presents huge conflicts of interest. That much is evident after watching BBC for about 60 seconds. Not really making any points here.
