i mean when you say your four year old can play chess, he knows how the pieces move but he sucks at chess i'm sure. but still, that's training. it's not something where he's really using his intellect, because he doesn't even really have one yet. and i'm not even against that really, i am against thinking that every little child is a potential wunderkind comparable to mozart and you should protect their sanctity of their individuality when a three year old babbles imma vegamaterian and you could probably give him a slim jim and say "that's nice son" and he'd fuckin eat it
you're just training him to be a vegetarian because you want it |

by the way
"Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty." and goodness knows if this isn't just a hot load of bullcrap in the first place, all of the pieces are notated by his father Last edited by Trotskilicious : 09-17-2012 at 01:18 AM. |

Mozart might have been a musical Wunderkind, but he wasn't born that way, no one is. An outstanding talent, yes, but to be trained like him would today be called child abuse. However, a child's early understanding of logical/mathematical movements or rules is in no direct relation to the development of its ability to make reasonable decisions or moral judgements. |

I've decided to be a vegetarian again since watching the three year old cry about it, yeah. I was vegan or vegetarian for seven years, from when I was 16 until I was 23.
He didn't say he was a vegetarian. I offered him to choice to be one after he said stuff like: "animals don't want to be killed. They don't like that." "I feel very sorry for the animals getting killed." "we shouldn't kill animals.", while his little face was wet with tears. It was pretty horrible to see him that upset. My older boy had no real reaction when I told him at a similar age. And even seeing his brother cry, he said he didn't mind eating animals because they have a good life on the farm beforehand. That thought doesn't comfort the younger one. He's far more sensitive, generally. |

What about your husband? Does he share your views - to upset a toddler by talking about killing animals and vegetarians?

did he get both sides of the story so that his mighty intellect could get a handle on this difficult, important lifestyle choice?

What's the other side.
My husband is happy to go along with it. I made mostly vegetarian meals anyway so he's used to us not having much meet. Like I said, I didn't say anything with the intention of telling him about animal slaughter, I was actually addressing a question the older one had about why blood and bone fertilizer smells so bad and where the blood and bone comes from. It didn't occur to me that it would upset the 3 year old because it hadn't bothered the 7 year old when I told him at a similar age, and I really only made mention of it in passing. |

the other side is that we are biologically designed to require fatty acids and protein that is found in meat and a vegetarian diet must be meticulously planned in order for it to compensate
i am unsure about what the academic debate is about developing children on vegetarian diets but i'll leave that to you to read about |

It's been over a week now. He's learning what has meat in it and says he doesn't want to eat it, and because I was vegetarian for so long before I'm aware of what he needs to eat and what substitutes are available. I'm obsessed with nutrition when it comes to my kids, anyway. But we were invited to a bbq yesterday and he immediately asked if we would be taking vegetarian food for him and me. His older brother is still learning to be respectful at 7 and takes pleasure in informing him which of his favourite foods have meat in them.
We'll see what happens. The point I wanted to make in this thread was that if something is important to my kids I want to help them work through it, not sweep it under the rug or teach them to pretend it doesn't matter. Slaughtering animals actually does matter to me. It could well really matter to him, too. My father for all his failings was a meat eating atheist, but when I came home from a brainwashing Jesus camp saying I was Christian, he bought me a Bible and wrote Love Dad in the front of it. When I went vegan at 16 he experimented with different foods with me and bought me an eggplant at Easter time as a joke. Little things like that add up among the other shit you're inevitably going to do, to fuck your children up. |

Oh really. Well I don't. But I do think that their opinions and feelings and preferences should be of interest to their parents and caregivers.
Yes it is always about my daddy. Does your mother still wash your clothes or what, speaking of parents. Do you make your own dinner or do they call you to the table when it's ready? Does your dog eat at the table or what? |

I don't know...I just thought he did. I guess because he doesn't have a job and isn't studying, so has no income...and I thought I'd seen other people rib him about it.
