they need the war to create the distraction away from the economy, at this point still the no. 1 issue in the race and not much can change that...unless the geopolitical matrix gets the big bang somewhere that changes everything (and likely forces Obama into war...which forays into Libya and Egypt notwithstanding, I dont think he wants to do the Iran thing for Isreal. He may have little choice soon).

Romney did himself no favors alienating the Ron Paul contingent at the convention. He lost some R votes, those who would never vote for Obama and now understand how Romney is a lost cause.

It looks like it's getting harder and harder to herd the wingnutz. If the GOP loses the presidental race and fails to take the Senate, it won't just be Romney's fault. It'll be the tea party and Paul followers who are demanding that their candidates adopt a radical agenda that the majority of Americans will never stomach.

If Obama wins it will mean that a Republican hasn't won the presidential popular vote (without a war to run on) since 1988. That's not because of candidate gaffs, it's because of their political philosophy and their agenda.
