I think Billy was bang on with his analysis of OK GO music videos.

I don't think they understand that just because you didn't direct something doesn't mean it wasn't your idea. Either way, they are irrelevant pop crap that only got popular because of that gimmicky video.

OKGO has made these interesting videos, and I am sure that in some ways these videos have gotten people to put money down and pay for their music where otherwise they may of never heard of them.
But I think the bigger majority, just watched it and said "ha that's pretty cool!" and that was it. No money left their pockets because videos aren't helping that much with selling music like they use to.
Thus why Billy said that their videos are "culture curiosities".
If OKGO was to write the next big hit song like Today or 1979 or Tonight, Tonight then what people would perhaps remember is the music video and the music that went with it...
I bet you a majority of people would tell you they know the song Today, 1979 or tonight, tonight when they hear it but maybe not the music video. And the reverse could be for OKGO, where they may know the Treadmill music video but not know the song if they heard it.

pretty sure the tonight, tonight video is paired with the song in most people's minds, though. maybe i'm wrong but the song blew up in a large part because of the amazing video.

I think showing their video back to back with one of the most iconic videos of the 90s kind of obliterated their comeback. Not to defend billy completely though wasnt his last music video that wrestling thing

I feel like such a dork for doing it but I can't help but saying "would have" instead of "would've" out loud. Maybe I'm trying to instil into people's minds that that's what it stands for.

I watched their videos for the first time today. I had previously never heard of them, but the song in the treadmill video was familiar. One thing that repeatedly came to mind was how creative their videos are, yet somehow the music is so generic I find myself almost wanting to mute it i.e. the This Too Shall Pass - Rube Goldberg Machine video. And the comment they make about Billy not having anything to do with the video. Just watch the behind the scenes videos, at least Billy didn’t have hundreds of people "Helping" him.

they have a right to take a shot at corgan, since he took one first, but the point they made was pretty meh.

their music still blows, however.

backhanded compliment

"I don't mind OK Go having a go at me if it gets their music heard."

wouldn't exactly call it classy, but not as shitty as usual

"Why are the most celebrated videos of the last five years basically just gimmicks as opposed to substantive things that are worth repeating? They're more like cultural curiosities like, 'Oh, look! They're running on the treadmill.'"
