You know what? I don't think I've ever heard these "Chicago songs". I think that was the time I stopped giving a shit about Corgan...

Are they any good? What's so great about them?

Billy also said that Oceania was the best album he's ever done.

His use of arbitrary superlatives when describing his own work is, at this point, meaningless.

It's folky and poetic in a way that Billy doesn't normally do.

it's hippie and plain post-zwan billy at it's hippiest and plainest rather than poetic. but it sure is folky.

it doesn't matter what style it is; it's good because it was probably the last thing he did because he wanted to.

Oceania and zeitgeist and all that other shit bombed both artistically and commercially because it aims to prove and to please, instead of just doing what feels good

I don't remember any negativity about those songs during that period.
2002-2005 was probably my most disconnected from the SP fan community, but even I remember Billy getting more praise on those songs than he would EVER get from TheFutureEmbrace.

I, as well as my best friend were at the Chicago songs show at the Metro & though it's been a long time since I've heard them, I'll tell you this. I was mesmerized by the atmosphere of my favorite artist baring his soul like that, recounting the memories made living in his beloved Chicago.

Also: I remember thinking ''God damn! This dude really is a genius guitar player.

I may get shit for this but his finger picking and emotive skills reminded me of the late, great Elliot Smith.

One of the best musical memories of my life, you guys.

We would be ever so lucky if he decides to release that record.

It was 1997 and I was choosing my AOL “screen name”. It was between MonteLDS or MonteSP at the time. I had thought to myself, well I might not always be a Smashing Pumpkin fan but I will always be LDS. Little did I know that I would also always be a Smashing Pumpkin fan.

I think he's lying. The real reason was that Sufjan Stevens released Illinois first and Billy got pissed.

So what songs are regarded as the chicago songs? To my knowledge we have the stuff from the 2004 metro gig, but are there other known material as well?

I think this is the only HQ recording of that show. It really is the best thing he's ever done in my opinion.

sounded like aimless wankery in my opinion, jarring tempo shifts,a long tuneless introduction and nothing that caught my ear melodically. typically 00's Bill.

i think bill would do best not to release any of that to the public (ie the wolves) and just let it remain a legend that die hard fans (ie people with no taste in music) can harp on about for their friends or anyone else who cares to listen.

Would you prefer him to release TheFutureEmbrace outtakes when he gets to that era in the reissues?

I mean it's a little overlong but I think it shows a musical maturity that he shit all over when it came time to write Zeitgeist.

I'm not sure if it's better than the Zeitgeist material. This is atmospheric accoustic material with actual quality:

Sun Kil Moon - Truckers Atlas

Nick Drake - Road

Simon and Garfunkle - Scarborough Fair

and thousands of other songs that are better than that Chigaco kid song. Why even bother with Billys failed 00's material?

and of course bill has written great accoustic stuff back in the 90's, a gift that seem to have left him completely for a while.
