I already made a thread for this awhile back but the search function is a worthless piece of shit.

Honestly, not too impressed with this on first listen. I love Kozelek, and I mean love him... Over the past few years I have been into him the way I used to love the Pumpkins, but this is just not doing it for me. I get what he was going for and I admire the stylistic departure because it is rather bold, but it just doesn't work on most of these songs. The lyrics to every song sound like a scrawled diary entry, which might be cool for a few tracks, but not all 17. Yes, 17. This record is long as shit. It's mostly nylon string guitar, but there isn't much of the majesty and grandiosity of Admiral Fell Promises. He was ostensibly going for "Mark chills the fuck out" but it sounds more like "Mark releases 17 demos written in 1 hour each"

trying to give it a 2nd listen now. I'm going to be really disappointed if this doesn't grow on me at least a little bit... the critics seem to have only positive things to say about it. I dunno, I just don't get it. It lacks the depth, the attention, and the brooding detail that have basically been the cornerstone of his songwriting.
