With that said, it still sounds pretty damn awesome and a whole lot better than Teargarden. I'm quite impressed thus far.

Gen boarders should not be allowed to post in this thread. Whatever they say will be negative even if they liked a song.

If you couldn't make it through the clips, then you might want to stop believing. I doubt it would be worth it for you to stick around with the same belief for another 4 years or when ever the next album comes out if 30 second clips turned you off.

Pale horse studio sounds promising.

A lot of it sounds just as cheesy or bland as some of the zeitgeist material. It's like he thought pomp and circumstances was a good idea.

And the cycle continues.

Listening to these thirty second clips is so disheartening, I actually like the guitar work and despite the corniness some of these synth tones have I really enjoy the melodies. The two things I just can’t get past are the uninspired vocal performance and the lack of percussive dynamics and proficient control over the sonic landscape. Mike is almost competent but it will always just be simple drum tracks as opposed to the full on musicality Jimmy’s training provided Billy’s music, that luxury is lost on Oceania.

not convinced. i think the songs we heard so far and liked will be good. for me thats mainly panopticon and pinwheels.

i reckon the rest won't be so great... the chimera sounds promising guitar-wise, but so did Come On Lets go. I sense some bad vocal melodies ruining it. one heart one diamond sounds horrible for example, inkless is VERY zwan (again, meaning musically interesting with bad lyrics and bad vocals)

Some of the tracks sound interesting, but Billy may as well have reverted back to his trusty drum machine instead of using Mike.

I know as Amazon samples these are obviously very lo-fi and not indicative of the real sound of the album. But it is still apparent that there's that awful Mike Byrne drum tone...that horrible sounding snare.

So voice mixed high yet again huh? Probably enough to ruin it for me. Is the voice dry as well or treated?

does anyone else feel like after the band split up, billy started writing melodies in a way that is really unmusical? like he crams in a lot of words and it's all choppy and theres barely even any melody there. i think it's part of the reason why his vocals come off a lot less passionate. it has become more like talking than singing. It's like the singing and the production both accent the worst qualities of each other.
At least in TFE it kinda fit the music in a disjointed, robotic kind of way, but I don't even know what he's trying to do anymore.

So.. Best album he's made in 15 years?

I'm actually digging the drum work on pale horse. Chances are that's the song corgan drummed on.

Some of the bass playing on this is also distracting. I get the sense Nicole doesn't always know where she's going and ends up hitting clunkers at certain points. She doesn't need to play the way she's playing on my love is winter and Oceania. I still prefer Darcy's simple ness.. Blah blah blah. Billy is still the best bass players for sp. he should have told Nicole to hang out in the tv room.

I don't know... sounds like the crowd in here is split down the middle. and many who are critical seem genuine... not just "haters"

you're never going to get any critical discussion on the Oboard

reaction in HU comments today was mostly positive

she's awfully busy and i think she's the type of player who is always trying to figure out her contribution, as opposed to playing down if the occasion necessitates it. that said, her playing on the song Oceania is great. it interacts with the melody really nicely, staying out of its way and adding a 'lil counterpoint. i also like her playing on glissandra.

HU is usually mostly positive with a few overly negative posters, but some people here seem a bit too hater-like. Not that it matters I guess. Somebody else's hate isn't going to change anyone's opinion.

Man some people get really fucking upset though when someone else doesn't like something as much as they like it.
