I agree 100%, but I don't know how to help her get to that point. I mean, she is financially dependent, but it has more to do with not wanting to disappoint her parents. Whenever we talk about it, it comes down to, "You just can't understand because you didn't grow up in this house."

yeah. I mean I hope so. It's almost like she has this compartmentalized identity, which I guess is true of everyone, but not to the point where their worldview turns on it's head when they go home for the holidays.

You heard about the priest that got caught having an affair with the maid? Yeah, they found his vest in her pantry and and her pants in his vestry. *kazoo*

I only had a few interesting talks with ropeylopey, but I don't think English was his first language, so he came off as being extremely frank about stuff. That might've offset the perception of him. idk.

Anyhow, tcm was the person who convinced me to move from "I don't know, and I don't care, because it's never affected me" to "That's clearly a bunch of made up crap." I told him about it and he had no clue he'd done so, and never intended to do so either.

Well every thing, no matter how horrible, has some positive outcome. He was probably just playing devil's advocate.

After that the guilt/anxiety over it went away completely, but there is still kind of a psychological hole there that I haven't figured out. I was deeply religious when I was a Christian, which I think you were too. It's hard.

Also I remember you made fun of me for reasoning my way out of religion via internet debates.
ironically enough, the biggest tool i've used in my search for answers has been the internet.

as some of you may remember (probably not), i was raised as one of jehovah's witnesses. thankfully, there are a ton of resources on the web about the fallacious and sometimes two-faced things that organization does, and it really helped me to see that there were problems with my religion. after that, the critical consideration of belief in god was the next natural step. there isn't much left after you let go of that.

the most important realization i've had is that my religious beliefs were solely emotionally based. JWs like to tout that they are the only christian religion that is based on "facts" and "reasoning," but in reality, it's the same emotional motivations packaged differently than the rest: feels good to think your loved ones will be brought back to life, feels good that the earth will be turned into a paradise, feels good that you'll live forever, feels good that everyone says they love each other, feels good that you have a complete "explanation" of the purpose of life and the universe, etc... sad thing is, none of those are intellectually based at all. just emotional reasons for belief.

charmbag, i must commend you for being one of the more well-spoken posters here and always keeping your cool. cheers for knowing what it's like.

well i am exactly the same.

oh boy, the arguments i've had to have with my family on this subject. have constantly had to argue that i'm not a different person, i can still be moral and always will be with or without belief in god. to some christians, it's unfathomable that people are capable of this: they sincerely believe that all morals stem from the bible and that without it, we would all devolve into anarchists who rape, pillage, and destroy others and ourselves because we wouldn't give a shit without god to stop us.

what a silly thing to consider

i had a roommate that was raised fundamentalist catholic and then broke away from that but she would latch on to particular philosophies and lifestyles in a very religious, intolerant way

like she started the real food diet shortly after she moved in and i'd have to listen to her lecture about yadda yadda if i was eating whataburger. she was incredibly fundamentalist about the diet and it was kind of a downer because you couldn't even make food without her going over all the different ways canned tomatoes are gonna give you cancer.

actually now that i think about it charmbag being raised religious explains the dogmatic, inflexible way she approaches feminism.

I've never understood people saying shit like that about religion. Maybe it's because I came to that realization in my teens, and I haven't devoted my life to intentionally remaining ignorant about the world. Even when I was a kid I don't think I ever really bought into it 100%. I don't get it and I never will. What is there to grieve for?

when I admitted to myself I was an atheist I felt like the world opened up. Like I went from a tiny little stale, restrictive perspective to an amazing, huge, interesting world. Something so much bigger and better than any religion could ever provide.
i read a psychological analysis of people who had lost their religion (will try to find it so i can share) that said this sense of loss comes from the belief in god, particularly in monotheistic religions. he essentially must "die" in your mind for you to be able to let go, and all the steps of guilt have to be worked through if he was ever considered real.

glad you didn't have to put up with all the bullshit, but it is very real for some people and can be difficult. especially considering the fact that my usual support group (my family and close friends) have become distant or even against me for considering any of this.

this is an interesting phenomena. not sure if it applies across the board, as i haven't really found anything to be passionately dogmatic about in religion's stead, but i can see how, without religion, there would be a hole to be filled.

i'd rather just focus on my hobbies / becoming a better man / improving my economic status. seems much more beneficial to myself and those around me than judging them over the fat in fast food.
