no. i believe it's merely symbolic, which the church would say is a heretical view. i basically pick and choose what i want to believe and what i don't. i go to mass on sunday only because i think it's important as an act of remembrance. the church just makes shit up.

to tell you the truth i'd be pretty content just reading the bible and living a good life. it's just that catholicism is so ingrained in me and my family that i'd feel weird to completely give it up. but yeah the church as an institution is just awful. i guess attending mass and hating it is still supporting it by being there.

There's a reason that people who commit suicide can still have a Catholic funeral... The Church recognized a while ago that mental illness makes you do crazy shit.

Any catholic who says otherwise is either ignorant of current Church teachings or is just being an asshole.

i don't need a lesson on catholicism

i spent 18 years in catholic schools blahblahblah i know it all. the fact that they allow funerals for people who commit suicide does nothing to change my opinion of it.

that can and does inform thoughts regarding an action like suicide.

that the church allows funerals doesn't change the fundamental teachings underlying members' thoughts on it.

This news is so sad.

I am morbidly glad he shot himself in the chest and not the head, hopefully good science can come from brain scans.

I mean to examine brain activity/cells to look for impact-caused issues, trauma, etc.

Right. And I'm saying it's sensible to assume that's why he shot himself in the chest and not the head. So that people could look at his brain.

Oh I misunderstood you. I have no idea if that kind of thought could go through your mind when you are in the condition to committ suicide, but regardless hope good can come from their findings. Head trauma is a significant issue the NFL is way behind on IMO.

Knowingly killing yourself because you don't value life is one thing... Having a serious mental illness is another. You're basically saying "I know the Catholic Church accounts for mental illness when dealing with suicide, and doesn't automatically say they're in hell, but I'm gonna hate on them for it anyway"

All your other issues with the Catholic church not withstanding...

one time i was inpatient and some mental health tech told me if i killed myself i'd go to hell

she also did this whole allegory that jesus forgave us all even though he was horribly tortured so i should forgive people who have hurt me

i really should have reported that place. it was practically a christian hospital. which is hilarious because they are well known for catering to gay people (they have a different floor just for "gay rehab")

Does anyone kill themselves because they "don't value life"? I reckon the vast majority of people who commit suicide are mentally ill.

Maybe, maybe not. Who knows what goes on in people's heads. My whole point is that the Church says "hey, we don't know, but they were probably mentally I'll" now instead of condemning the person with fire and brimstone and refusing them a funeral because they're automatically assumed to be in hell.

I'm not really trying to jump in here and claim the Catholic church is soooo great, but it just irks me when people hate on it for non-legitimate reasons.

The fact that it's even an issue is ridiculous, but I getcha. There are a shitload of legit reasons.

I did on the patient satisfaction thing. The thing with reporting psych hospitals is they don't believe you because they think you are crazy.

My doc also almost poisoned me by doubling a med that has to be titrated slowly. Luckily I knew enough about my medications to know this and refused to take it. The charge nurse worked the next day and I told him and he wrote an incident report (he agreed it was ridiculous and dangerous).

Private hospitals are the way to go - I got dumped in this place the one time I got sectioned/forced inpatient.

no i'm saying that the catholic church weaves a complex web of self loathing and doubt and confusion and guilt and that it fucks people up basically across the board.

I think it depends on the church/school you went to, dude. I know way too many normal, well adjusted Catholics to agree with you.

But no doubt that some schools fuck kids up. You'd think there'd be some kind of standard....

i mean

define normal and well-adjusted

basically all of my friends are catholic (er, raised catholic) and my whole family is catholic and they're pretty much all well-adjusted and doing quite well. but there seems to always be some stuff just beneath the surface. and my friends come from different schools and churches and geographical areas from all over the country. so it's not like my sample size is terribly limited.
