Why does Mellon Collie begin and end with a piano solo?

It hit me when I was listening to "Farewell and Goodnight" the other day. The song ends with a piano solo. It was obviously a conscious decision to begin and end the album with a piano solo, why do you think that decision was made? What does it mean artistically, creatively, symbolically, or otherwise to you?

To me, it must represent coming full circle. I remember the band mentioning that the album was supposed to represent a day in the life of a person so to me beginning and ending the album like this represents how we often end up starting where previously ended thus coming full circle (the end is the beginning is the end, the beginning is the end is the beginning).

I had MCIS played during my wedding processional. It's a beautiful piece.

I remember both of them having terrible key signatures and thinking they were obviously written by someone who had learned to play by ear. VIP roy though. I guess it's fairly common to start quiet, build up to something, and then end quiet. Just a nice form for music and it suited the tracks that had been recorded to be put in that order.

Lots of his big epic songs do that too iirc, Starla, Mayonnaise, Soma...He liked that form I guess and was good at writing that way.

That's a good theory but it doesn't explain why the piano itself was chosen as the instrument rather than something else.

My guess is that he had just started writing on it and was excited about it, and it was something that nobody had heard him do before, a suitable beginning to a concept album that aimed to be different.

OR

He was going through some kind of closeted affection for Elton John and it was a secret tribute. Who knows. I think it has more to do with the first one, though.
