Bustamante began taking the antidepressant drug Prozac after a suicide attempt on Labor Day 2007 at the start of her eighth grade year. Her dosage of the medication had been increased just two weeks before she murdered Elizabeth. Bustamante's attorneys presented evidence from a psychiatrist who testified that Prozac could have been a "major contributing factor" in the slaying - a theory rejected by a prosecution psychiatrist who insisted there was no scientific evidence of Prozac causing homicides, or even increasing aggression.

This is absolutely ludicrous. And people wonder why I think there's major cultural forces at work that try and marginalize anti-depressants and other drugs. Unfortunately, psychiatrists can only work on the problems that the patient describes, and if they're feeling homicidal urges and strong anti-social tendencies and they don't ever let anyone know about this they're going to be misdiagnosed. Just another example of quackery and cultural ignorance at play. "Oh it must have been the prozac. If only she enhanced her positivity matrix with smiles and gumdrops."

the whole reason why you have these people who go on antidepressants and wind up going on killing sprees or crazy homicidal runs shortly thereafter is that the antidepressants throw them into a manic state where they feel like they are gods and have extreme impulsivity. when a depressed person who already has sociopathic traits suddenly loses all their inhibitions and feels all powerful after being on the antidepressants... they are more likely to act on their homicidal ideations than if they were depressed and inhibited. This girl was probably diagnosed with depression and then swung into a manic state from the meds because she was actually bipolar.
