i come in contact with quite a handful of ufc fighters of different degrees where i work (somehow) and what struck me is that they mostly seem like guys who were always really into sports but lacked the grace and talent to achieve a particular skill.

Couple this with the limited amount of time in which to fight (as compared to 12 rounds of boxing), and it becomes obvious that, although scarred and bloodied, an MMA fighter is much less likely to sustain permanent, debilitating brain damage as a result of fighting in the sport. obviously there aren't enough dead and old mma fighters yet to know about brain damage but i think there are at least decent arguments for saying that boxing is more dangerous long term. also from what i've seen lately in some big matches of mma the guys are basically knocked out in the first round.

It's modern gladiators without steel. I am by no means a bro but I respect someone who gets their body into that kind of physical condition and can kick ass. Don't even watch it really but those guys are in better shape than probably any other athlete

yeah i get that the dudes who fight in these matches are pretty damn dedicated and stuff, so good luck to them. but like trots said, i can't get they are allowed to pin their opponent to the ground and basically pummel the guy in the face until the ref thinks the fight is over.

at least gladiators were cool.

my argument has nothing to do with their safety since i enjoy american football and that ruins peoples brains, bodies and in general is patently ridiculous and violent, but i do believe in a certain dignity of man that doesn't really lend to squatting on a man's chest and punching his face until he quits, as if that's some kind of contest.

dean mentioned the fights barely last one round, and that's really why they only last one round, since they allow you to kick and punch a man when he is down

that's a bit of a stretch. boxing officials are pretty pedantic when it comes to the safety of the fighters whereas mma officials are happy to see someone who is pinned to the ground punched/kneed in the face 12 times before they step in.
