1) The bible has gone through so many translations , from King James taking out what didn't suit him, to language differences, to updates to the modern vernacular, that it is basically a 2000+ year old game of telephone.

2) the notion that a god is just and also punishes humans for being born into one religion or the other is a logical fallacy

3) those who subscribe to deist beliefs (a creator made the universe and it's laws, but divine intervention is not possible) are somewhat more logical, BUT

4) the evidence against a creator is just so or even more compelling than the evidence for. Atheists are innocent until proven guilty

5) Jesus himself can be seen as a parallel to Buddha, mohammed, etc and speaks to the pattern of human belief to rationalize and be persuaded easily

Basically, following Jesus is a cult, one equally as ridiculous, and though his teachings have good elements they are mostly parables and proverbs of common sense that any scholar could formulate. And what's more concerning is that side of Christianity that preaches fear, lack of trust in oneself, and blind faith/submission to authority. Just look at the alignment of these behaviors with the political parties and their likelihood of belief.

btw i think 99% of christianity can be divided into the three main categories of catholic, orthodox and protestant. catholicism is the most monolithic of these, orthodox christianity is very varied but shares communion with at least some of the patriarchs etc. protestantism can best be divided into lutheran, calvinist (including puritan) and radical protestant (anabaptists, quakers, etc.)

what's the point of posting about anything here? you don't have any issue performing perpetual cunnilingus on ayn rand.

and i just think it's funny that you always deflect anything about your religious beliefs and make lame gay jokes instead.

like i've said, it seems like you're embarrassed by your own beliefs.

no it's just that we've been through this before multiple times in the past and it's all been said and done, and you baiting people into getting into nonsense arguments with you isn't something in which i care to participate

Default religions

some thing(s) or some body (bodies) came down from the sky and manipulated us in some way (usually through gifts of language or knowledge in creation myths) that aided us to become the people we are today.

concepts of satan are the "bad guys" that believed that this knowledge should be shared with man. the "good guys" didn't want to share these gifts so there was a mutiny and the "good guys" won, i suppose.

you know how history works - whoever wins gets to tell the story from their POV so of course they're going to make themselves the "good guys".

um. i was giving examples of protestant denominations.

not sure what you're saying here. 'the distinction between tradition and scripture is not clean-cut' = what i was trying to demonstrate with that paragraph.

i'll defer to you on this since you've been part of the catholic church, but your parenthetical point is why i used the wording i did.

it is kind of funny to me that when discussing some people's beliefs many have an unclear understanding of what their religion actually teaches. this has almost become secondary any more. just an interesting side point.

abraham, whose schizophrenic visions are the basis for judaism, christianity, and islam, died at the ripe ol' age of 175. i never trust a man a day over 160, myself.

i find it hard to grasp that an all-knowing being exists in the skies. i just cannot wrap my head around the concept that such a being could exist despite there being no proof of its existence other than a book written years and years ago.

that's just my opinion though.
