I don't even think it's true in that respect. I've had bad beer in lots of places. Beer that is just as bad as awful American macro swill.

As for the Belgians, yeah they know what's up, and if I venture out of my IPA comfort zone it's usually for a Belgian style. But breweries like Unibroue (although that's Canadian) and Ommegang do a fine job with the styles.

How you feel about good American pale ales?

I point you in the direction of either Three Floyd's Alpha King (or their Zombie Dust, but that is harder to find) or Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale.

in my experience, it was difficult to find high abv beers in the UK. aside from Fuller's Golden Pride, which was phenomenal.
