booze is absolutely as bad as all the drugs you're staying away from
at least the "party pills and the like"
i mean i guess meth and heroin are the ultimate but like booze seems about as "soul sucking" as it gets

Punk Rock In The Wrong Hands : I am a prisoner in a war of idiots. The stomping feet of waltzing hypocrites pave the way of a brave tomorrow. Choke the throat of passion and sorrow. Kill my drifting breeze of thought. I havebeencaptured. I havebeencaught. I am a prisoner in a war of scowls, coughing youth from its bowels. I am doing fine. I am feeling well, deep inside my dark well cell.

I said party pills because i didn't want to lump all pills in one category. Some help with various disorders. Mostly talking about highly addictive pain killers taken for no reason other than to party or whatever. And a healthy attitude about alcohol means something. If it was fucking up my life, at all, I'd step back. but as it stands nah, don't consider it a big deal. And just to be straight I drink 6-8 beers a night. I'm not slamming down half gallons puking on my room mates cat and showing up to work with piss stains on my pants. I'm never late on bills, I do my thing. My only concern, as trots put it, is relative to health issues.

It's like so what if this is my flask. Sometimes you just need to loosen the tie around your neck:

Yeah, you're probably right. His life, his decision. But fuck, it sucks watching someone fuck themselves in the ass.

nah dude. part of being a friend is coming at them when they can't see how bad they're fucking up. it doesn't have to be aggressive or hostile, but sometimes people need to get CHECKED. my friends have done it to me and i'm glad they did. i wish they'd done it sooner, to be honest.

sounds like you need a sit-down beer with your buddy and give him a straight up "WTF" and offer help. tell him what you're seeing and why you're concerned FOR HIM.

let him stew for a while after that. give it time. see if he makes an effort to change.

if nothing changes or it gets worse, draw a thicker line and be firm. tell him you're not getting involved, etc. distance yourself and let him make his decisions. whatever happens happens. but if hes your homie you gotta try and tell him what's up.

i'm going through something kinda similar;

one of my best friends of 12 years was supposed to get married this past october. her fiance was awesome. i loved him we were really good friends. he had become a part of our little family. they had a really good thing going. they bought a house a year ago and are both doing really well in their careers.

in july she freaked out about the thought of married with a house and talk of kids and a 5 year plan to sell the house and move eslewhere/career advance opportunities...etc. she wanted to have the world to herself again. and i understood everything she meant- i know her. she's 26. shes a wild one. i told her i supported her if she really felt she couldnt go through with it but whatever you do, dont hurt him. tell him. work it out. because she still loves him. a lot. she tells me this every time i talk to her. still.

she cheated on him
they broke up
it got nasty
now she's basically living with this new dude. they're constantly drunk. she's alienated her friends because she's so incredibly wrapped up with this guy and doing whatever he wants to do. he's kinda creepy and controlling. they're always fighting when they're drunk. but all she does is make plans with him to go to paris and shit and basically living the life she had before, but with a shitty guy and headed for a trainwreck.

through all of this i was her personal therapist......and like i said it got nasty. i love her, so i was always down to give a shoulder. but i'm not down with the messy drunk nights and getting blown off so she can get shitfaced with him. so basically i kept a safe distance until she could show me that she was capable of sitting down and having an honest conversation. we had a little chat. she knows how i feel. not much has changed except i'm not around as much.

she'll figure it out. it's her life, not mine. I can't make her decisions for her, but i can make sure they don't make my life miserable, too.

tough love is still love.

Nah, its cool. I just can't reasonably defend drinking every night. It's something I do because i like to. I enjoy myself while i do it. Pretty much all there is to it. I won't be drinking tonight tho, as I have a shit ton of manual labor to do tomorrow. Helping my buddy move. You bet your sweet ass I'm going to drink tomorrow though. I'll probably up the ante to the full gallon, however.

i mean

over summer at least i drink pretty much every night

6-8 beers just seems like a lot of liquid to deal with.

i'd usually do one beer when i got home from work. maybe one after that. then a drink with dinner. i am not of the mind that drinking every day is inherently a bad thing. but 6-8 beers.. i dunno. like i said, too much liquid.

my parents have always been every-night drnkers. like a six pack and a smaller bottle of wine between them. sometimes they'll quit for a month or two but it always starts again. *shrug* they're functional. i hope i don't ever get to that point.

My grandfather drinks more than anyone I have ever met. nowadays by noon he'll be on his second/third martini, usually switches over to red wine eventually. bat shit cray.
