I totally understand what you guys are saying. And I agree about the reality of the world and how shit works. I know all too well what a bitch-slap to the face from the real world feels like.

but I'd rather get slapped around on my way to something better than a cubicle, than get a nice comfy new chair every year with my holiday bonus. and no this isnt a "smart" way to think. it's not going to "advance my career" or make me "big bucks", it's not "what employers want to hear". but i don't want that life. so what? get over it.

"that's not the way the world works.....stop encouraging t**** blah blah blah. so fucking what. let people make their own decisions and mistakes and worry about your little bubble and following the rules and i'll pat you on the head and say good job. if it makes you happy.

i'm sick of this mentality that because "this is how it is now" somehow means we all have to just shrug and go along with it cus dems da rules.

fuck this noise.

I understand that the business major starts out higher up than a person with a BA but I think that selling people with BAs short is shooting yourself in the foot, the good ones (i.e. not 28if and ilp) are generally very good at a lot of things that companies are looking for, like critical thinking, research, written and oral communication skills and also i think BAs have the intangible imagination and brain storming qualities that more literal minded business and applied sciences majors lack. Basically, if you're looking for an ideas person you would do well to consider people with BAs. Just make sure they aren't absolutely daft and full of shit.
you're mostly correct. If you come out of college with a BA in history or english and you go into a business related field you're not going to start out on the same level as someone who did well in a business degree program.

once you have a few years of experience, though, your degree really doesn't mean anything. so, if you start out really low in an organization and do well you can work your way up. We hire business majors into entry level analyst positions. but someone without that specialized degree might end up in some type of a support service (hourly instead of salaried), or even as a "temp". If they do well they can make it to the "entry level" position of analyst. It'll just take them longer.

I think that type of scenario is true in many business organizations today. Experience trumps your degree. It was true for me. Back in the 90s I left college with a History and Philosophy degrees. But the business world is changing. And it's getting harder and harder for people who don't go through specialized business programs to get into some entry level jobs.

you sound angry. like life broke your heart.

I think people too often are told that they can have a "career" that they love AND make bank. Truth is, if you want a good salary, benefits, etc. you have to find a way to like the jobs that give you that.

what's the alternative to sitting in a cubicle if you haven't engaged in some other specialized training or education?

it did.

right now i'm in the process of being hired at a grass-roots school in rural nepal. i have no specialized training in education.

i have a BS in political science and international relations.
i have specialized training in community organizing.
I have coaching experience (part of the job they want me to do is implement a sports program in the school)

no cubicle for me.
no money for me.

that's because you feel this need to bring every conversation back to how you don't want to be held within THE MAN'S constraints and you'll do what you want and everyone else can go fuck themselves!!

look, i get that you're doing what you're doing because you can and you want to and it's what works for you. it has nothing to do with ilp getting a BA in english, going to teach even though she has no desire to, and planning on writing about fucking astrophysics on the side.

jesus christ.

I think it goes to show that a BS is probably more valuable in attaining a random ass job than a BA. And employers know this, because they know people can fake their way through a liberal arts degree more easily than ever before.
rollins is also bull, filled with the most entitled and snobby students i've seen (definitely beats umiami on the basis of smaller size and perceived exclusivity)

Mmm I tell people this all the time when they question why I am always so consumed with school. You really can't bullshit your way through it at all. Don't get me wrong I love school and I am passionate about what I'm learning, wouldn't be worth it to me if I wasn't no matter how much money, but it can be alienating at times-especially when people are not familiar with science beyond the general stuff. Its valuable to employers not just because you can't fake your way through the degree but the concurrent labs that go with the material give you training that you wouldn't be able to get on your own ("I can teach myself" doesn't apply to some things, unless you have a truck of money at your disposal). This is assuming that you have a good lab department/program director/ professor.

Yeah, I have a friend who went to a private Uni for her BS in biology or something and she got a job at Harvard as a research assistant (her dad has worked there for like 15 yrs) and she started her masters at their "Harvard extension school" (she gets 90% off tuition and reimbursement) and she is basically doing parts of her undergrad over- retaking statistics ... stuff she already learned, forgot because it wasn't applied, and will forget again. I'm not sure if there is a research part of it I don't know how that works there, I know some schools are different. For her because she gets so much off I suppose its worth it if she is getting such a deal.

Other people I know that getting their master's in things like academic administration always talk about these 20 pages papers they have due. I don't know but that seems pretty stupid to me.

i mean i had to write a fair number of those for a history undergrad but you can probably figure that there's plenty of topics to write that extensively on in the field of history

what kind of idiotically narrow scope is academic administration anyway

and how does it differ at all from business administration

does academia still pretend superficially that it isn't a business?

I don't know I think they want to do academic advising or something. The person is actually really great at helping students and people in general, and she has worked at a college for like several years in enrollment. She's older, just waited to get her masters a guess. I don't know if it is exactly called academic administration but it's something alone those lines
