yeah. i get it. the real world. facts. reality. jaded. rules. careers. credentials. got it.

i apologize for trying to lighten everyone up. jeez

Edgar Cayce knew more about the cosmos than most people alive today and i think he had a 9th grade education.

no, not everyone is Edgar Cayce. But it's more fun to think that something is possible than to constantly cut everyone down because of REALITY.

1. Congrats on graduation. I was also an English major.

2. The hours for teaching are not great. I'm not sure what level teaching you want to do - but I'm at the elem. level and I go in at 6:45, usually leave work around 5-5:30pm and am still planning/preparing/grading after work and on the weekends. Besides holidays and summers the hours suck. I work twice as many hours because of all the going early, staying late and working at home as my husband.

3. Don't just go into it because you don't know what else to do. You'll get burned out quick and be looking for another job within your first year, if you can find a job. It took me 2 years to get a teaching job, I had to work as an assistant (making 13k a year) for two years even though I was certified with a degree before a teaching job became available within my school/district. Finding a teaching job in Texas (at least the dfw area) was hell because there are way too many teachers and not enough jobs.

4. If you just graduated with a BA in English (like I did) you'll have to get other certifications through the state of Texas to teach and go into an alternate certification program to get those certifications. It cost me 4k after graduation to enter the certification program to get certified to teach not including the costs for the exams because I didn't major/minor in education.

I think this is part of the reason that liberal criticism of Obama is at least partially unwarranted. The system is broken, and you can't just fix it in a few years. Implementing a single payer system immediately would put tons of people out of jobs immediately. Scaling back our military spending would put tons of people out of jobs. Not just military guys, but all the poepl who work for companies that take their contracts and the guy who works at Taco bell outside of whichever bases take most of the cuts.

Change can't happen until all of those pepole find something else to do. Change must be cultural first, i think, though that is kind of an unweidly statement.

Blah I'm done.

lol I'm too lazy to go back and look to quote that but since when does management get paid a lot? My understanding is that maybe general, district, etc. managers get a decent salary but the large bulk of managers (assistant managers, shift managers-whatever you call them so you can give them less money but still more work and hours) don't make that much for the hours they put in. If you are talking about government jobs maybe, but corporate shit holes I don't think so.

and no I have never had a managerial job so I can't speak from experience just secondhand from what I see from people I know and family.

business management is generally a degree that offers faster advancement in the cubicle field which is what most BAs are going to be doing regardless of youthful naivete about "doing what you love" and all that mularkey

i kind of wish i took more economics classes

i mean it wouldn't necessarily translate into better job opportunities because i'm still, y'know, me but it would mean i'd be better at advancing economic theories at parties

by the way i wanted to point out that when E was arguing with 28if about how he just goes with his intuition in spite of any kind of evidence or reasoning it's really pretty much summed up by the quote in his location (which is attributable to me)

Quote:
yeah seriously i think we've more than established a consensus on reality, it's not that abstract.
i mean if he thinks that's a stupid comment he's got a thinking problem

i think most of us can agree a tree is a tree, that's what i was getting at. but apparently he doesn't think so, i guess?

i got 2/3 through an economics degree before dropping out when i realised i didn't want to be an economist. but i'm really glad i studied it. it really was appalling how little i knew beforehand, even basic microeconomics stuff. definitely worth finding some free courses online if you can. maybe try itunes u?

earlier i got through 2/3 of a music degree before quitting that, too. but i'm doing okay, thanks

true.

we hire dozens of business majors from half a dozen universities every year. they go to the front of the line over entry level applicants with liberal arts degrees. but they also have specialized business degrees for our field, not just "business admin."

it used to be a generalized liberal arts degree could get you a good job. that's not the case anymore. Those days are over. Why would I hire an English major when I can pick someone from a university that designs a curriculum for the job?

i don't recall the specifics of the thread it came up in, but my only point is that the entirety of existence is not totally subjective, e.g. most of us (except for the mentally insane outliers) when asked what color the sky is, will say blue. So there is a baseline concept of reality.

I dunno why he put it in his profile, to be honest. I don't think he understood the point at all.

granted, when BAs are handed out to people as daft as ilp and 28if and total slackers like myself (gotta be honest) the degree becomes pretty cheap and a poor measuring stick for academic rigor but sharp minds are honed ever sharper by liberal arts disciplines.

I understand that the business major starts out higher up than a person with a BA but I think that selling people with BAs short is shooting yourself in the foot, the good ones (i.e. not 28if and ilp) are generally very good at a lot of things that companies are looking for, like critical thinking, research, written and oral communication skills and also i think BAs have the intangible imagination and brain storming qualities that more literal minded business and applied sciences majors lack. Basically, if you're looking for an ideas person you would do well to consider people with BAs. Just make sure they aren't absolutely daft and full of shit.

Ok I'm sorry like I said before I'm extremely tired. I dont mean to generalize and I guess I don't mean "lead to nowhere" like your doomed if you go that route. I just see a lot of pick that as kind of a default because they don't know what they want to do and expect it to get them a job after school just because it's a degree. But really any degree can lead to that if your passive and even if your not the job market can still fuck you. As cliche as it sounds it does depend on the individual , as do all things I guess

there's a billboard around town for Rollins College that says "Earn your MBA in one weekend a month!". I have a friend pursuing his ph.d. in pure (not applied) mathematics and we all just laugh and laugh and laugh whenever we see it, because for him as a grad student in a scientific field, he works his ass off. He is never able to hang out because he's doing math all the fucking time. He is constantly sleep deprived because he's writing proofs for complex analysis problems.

I think it goes to show that a BS is probably more valuable in attaining a random ass job than a BA. And employers know this, because they know people can fake their way through a liberal arts degree more easily than ever before.
