a lot of people go to college and major in what they're GOOD at, opposed to what they LOVE. a sad truth.

eventually the two come together in some weird fucked up way.
she's 21 (22?). give her a break and let her figure it out.

also, there are huge differences between writing about physics vs astronomy or astronomy vs the cosmos or the cosmos vs metephysical thought. you dont have to be a rocket scientist to be able to write about the stars; just because she didnt major in physics and may be bad at math, doesnt mean she knows nothing about the topic. i dont think she's pulling it out of her ass for "something to write about".

I dont get what's so bad or confusing about "Im good at this so a majored in it, but i'm really interested in this and i want to some day put the two together. but right now i need to get on my feet."

taking a teaching job right out of college in order to pay the bills isnt anything to scoff at. ESPECIALLY in this economy. plenty of people teach abroad for a year, or do subbing until they get into grad school.

nobody dissed tehbolly1! for suggesting that he might take a job at intel for the job security instead of working in his field for a major television show.

calm down.

his job at intel doesn't involve teaching other people things though

people who don't want to teach shouldn't teach because they will in all likelihood be shitty teachers

I dont want to be a lawyer because i got so bored in undergrad pre-law that the idea of 3 years post-grad doing that shit would drive me crazy. I went to 30% of my classes and aced it. To this day my mom harps on be about going to law school because i'd be so good at it.

i dont want to be a lawyer. does that mean i'd be shitty at it?

also this. astrophicisys are not primiarly talented at/enjoy communicating their ideas to the commonfolk. there is a market for this. look into it? gotta do what you love/love what you do.

yeah but usually you should be able to give reasons as to why things appear the way they allegedly appear to you

they "allegedly" appear to me?

and you didn't ask for reasons you asked what gave me the authority to say that which is nothing really. i don't really feel like talking about it anymore but the next time i do, which i'm sure will be soon, i'll try to emphasize my reasoning.

well the answer to the question is no but that is fairly obvious.

but doing well in pre-law undergrad classes doesn't indicate anything about either how well one would do in law school or how good a lawyer one would be.

how well one does in law school isn't really indicative of how good of a lawyer someone will be either.

well when you just say things without grounding them in any sort of reasoning it seems just as likely that it's just entirely made up because you think it sounds cool or something

No really, I majored in physics for several years, and my husband has a masters degree in it... you really can't write about physics (especially theoretical or astro) unless you've actually got an education in it. It's some seriously deep stuff. A BA in English ain't gonna cut it.

I mean, I guess you could write about it, but you're not gonna get it published. I had a professor who had a PhD in theoretical physics and had a hard time getting things published.

No, but they've certainly got something more than BA in English.

*shrug* if she's interested in it enough and a good writer and devoted i think she could get something published. just 'cause she doesn't have a uni degree doesn' tmean she automatically knows nothing about astrophysics or whatever.

the main point i think is that it is something she is passionate about, so go for it!

I know

but im just saying you never know what someone else really knows about some things, despite their credentials. People write about all types of shit they aren't schooled on. *shrug* you gotta give her credit for the passion, though you know? life hasn't jaded her enough yet. i think it's kinda cool.

I don't think you realize how involved theoretical and astro physics are.

just want to point out that you're completely ignoring the credibility a degree confers upon an academic and his or her research and writings. so yeah it matters, whether you agree with it does not.

well now that i think about it, i bet if you followed your not-wanting-to-be-a-lawyer all the way through, all the while not wanting to do it, you'd probably not be a very good lawyer. and my whole point was that you acing pre-law undergrad tests doesn't tell us anything about what kind of lawyer you would be. that's silly. so my theory really isn't "challenged" by your anecdote.

also, teaching involves caring about what you are teaching and about who you are teaching. it's a completely different animal. and if you're doing it as a stop gap you're going to most likely suck at it.
