What else am I supposed to do with an English degree? Freelance writing won't help me get an apartment, and I hate journalism and editing even more than schools. At least teachers have awesome hours!

I'm not going to the ceremonies. I dislike crowds and lines and that's all there will be. I'd rather have my diploma mailed and just go out with some friends. But if you graduated too, congrats!

why did you get a degree in the English if it results in you doing something you don't want to do (teach)??

perhaps this should have crossed your mind before getting an english degree. please don't transmit your distaste for school and have your students read it as a distaste for education.

The only reason I'm going is for my parents. And I did graduate, thanks!

I had no idea we went to the same university. I suppose the person I saw once that I thought looked like you actually was you. Weird.

I initially didn't know WHAT I wanted to do so just started taking classes at a community college since I fucked up in high school so badly. By the time I finished that, I found I enjoyed my literature classes the most and thought I could pursue some sort of degree in literary criticism but later admitted to myself that would be worthless. I'm really more interested in a job at this point, and teaching is pretty stable and less mind-numbing than scanning groceries. I don't think it's something I will do forever, but it's nice to have an actual direction to go in right after college besides my parents' couch.

Literary criticism is too specific. Like you just pointed out, English degrees leave a few more doors open. Teaching for now, then let life happen.

i think the common perception is that an english degree is basically little other than a degree in literary criticism

a few schools separate their lit and writing programs but not very many, and it seems silly to me, tbh.

i mean what were your classes like that didn't have anything to do with literary criticism

I did mostly focus on literature courses since I enjoyed them the most, but I took things like editing, creative and technical writing, etymology, rhetoric, and thematic type literature classes more focused on context than method. It's still an interesting field to me, but I know I'm settling. I'd rather study space but I don't have the math skills and I don't want to spend any more time in school.

you don't major in English to get a job. Unless it's teaching or editing or as a vehicle to a more specialized degree. or you have been misled/are ignorant.

If you've got the money/scholarships/grants (as I did) to spend two or four years studying English/*insert other liberal arts field here* I think you should definitely go for it because it can be extremely rewarding and certainly hones critical thinking skills/etc. The problem is that we have all of these recent Liberal arts grads expecting their psychology degree to automatically turn into a job, which it pretty much did pre-2008. It's a failure of the system.

As far as ILP's predicament, do not try to be a teacher if you don't want to teach. Teaching is REALLY hard and you're going to end up quitting anyway if you are not personally devoted to the task. You wont enjoy it and you will not help your students.

obvs there are a lot of jobs for "management" majors i just think that precicely that fact is a big reason America is facing so many problems right now. example: actually reforming healthcare into an effective system would put a lot of "managers" out of a job. because management, by and large, is a field in which people get paid a lot to move papers around and check facebook and look busy. it's the same in tons of other fields.

I think this is part of the reason that liberal criticism of Obama is at least partially unwarranted. The system is broken, and you can't just fix it in a few years. Implementing a single payer system immediately would put tons of people out of jobs immediately. Scaling back our military spending would put tons of people out of jobs. Not just military guys, but all the poepl who work for companies that take their contracts and the guy who works at Taco bell outside of whichever bases take most of the cuts.

Change can't happen until all of those pepole find something else to do. Change must be cultural first, i think, though that is kind of an unweidly statement.

Blah I'm done.
