only watch the news on TV if you want to become more ignorant. These days especially, television news, even in less biased outlets, is basically presented at a third grade level. Half the shit they report on is either completely inane and worthless, meaningless celebrity bullshit, or totally inconsequential feelgood nothingness because most people are too stupid to watch something if it might make them feel bad. The parts which are actually supposed to be substantial are commonly filled with factual inconsistencies, insanely reductive generalizations and simplifications, and people shouting their opinions at each other, which are generally founded on nothing more than ideology and emotion.

ok, example. Mainstream American TV media (and a lot of print too) very commonly describes anyone shooting at Americans in Afghanistan as Taliban. This is just blatantly, blatantly wrong but they have been doing it for ten years and continue to do it every day. There are at least two other major insurgent groups in Afghanistan (the Haqqani and Heknatyar networks) which have fought the US tooth and nail, just as hard as the Taliban. If you put those two networks together, they have probably killed MORE Americans than the Taliban. But on the news, they are all Taliban, even though they only thing they have in common is that they want to kill Americans. This is just a very, very basic example... but if you actually want to learn something substantial and in real terms (not dumbed down so that middle schoolers can understand it), you must read.

A few months ago when the USA's credit or whatever got downgraded I happened to have no laptop for a few days starting on the day it got downgraded. You would have thought the end of the world was near. I sincerely couldn't tell at the time if it was really important, earth-shattering news or if that's how the news always presents everything (this was MSNBC and CNN).

Of course it was the latter as I found out when I got hooked back up. Fuck TV news. No wonder everyone is so anxious all the fucking time.

It was all "OBAMA MUST RESPOND TO THIS TODAY THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!" pffft
